Sidney's parents died when he was relatively young, leaving him a fairly large amount of money. He only worked at aperture because his parents had, and he wanted to give something to place's staff. Little cakes.

He was a cook in the Aperture Science Food Assembly Room, and was in charge of desserts. What he loved most of all was baking cakes for the staff and going round to give them to everyone himself. Some people mocked him for his love of cake, but the majority of people just enjoyed the cake.

Like Wheatley, who's Tuesdaily cupcakes made working at Aperture a little less boring. That and going out with Sid everynow and again for a drink. The two were good friends.

It's my head canon that all the cores were Aperture employees, who were deemed perfect to try and stop GLaDOS, and so had their minds uploaded into the cores and were attached to Her by the company. Certain inhibitors were used to contol and isolate thought patterns, to only use one quality each of them had to try and make GLaDOS behave.

In Sidney, it was cake.

Or more specifically, a cake recipe. Over time he forgot the actual ingredients and substituted them for things he thought were appropriate, but eventually the little human common sense he had left wore away and left an insane ball of AI constantly reciting the "sediment shaped sediment" cake recipe, until Chell threw him in the incinerator.

Only Wheatley really missed him.

However, I don't think GLaDOS mentions how hot it gets in there. Aperture devices can survive 4000 Kelvin.

He could be still down there, screaming that cake recipe for no one to hear.

Except Morality, Curiosity, Anger and the companion cube, but they're terrible company.
