Description today on the sea shore. It's a very short exposure.. just to know when to push the button! with the digital camera delay and all that..

Freezing my ass off, but I think it was worth it!

E D I T : The place: Europe (east side) - ROMANIA - Constanta (a city by the Black Sea shore) [ ~Constanta for some more ] A concrete pier made of the same structural modules as in the "January 2005" photograph. Camera: Canon G6 ISO 50, shutter speed 1/2000 and the apreture I think it was around 4 (quite sunny and so I got the intense blue). For more like this go see [link] (from last year with ma "crapcam" but at this 900/700 size it's not obvious ) Thank you ~ ecstremista and ^Moonbeam13 and thanks to all you folks reading this!

Hey, thanks for freezing your ass off for this shot! This is a gorgeous capture, great job. It really gives us a peak into winter in the far north... that is, for those of us living in more warmer climates.

This is what I love about the DA community...it's almost a travelogue into other parts of the world!

Thanks for the nice words. Far North?? no way!! Romania (and my town for that matter) is on the 45° parallel which makes it more like... Oregon, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Toronto area of Ontario, New York ... you know.. Not that FAR NORTH...

But I guess that if ... it never rains in southern California... it neeever rains in Califooornia, but girl don't they warn ya...

(fine place California! )

Interesting---in Canada, we think of sea/ocean as similar and make no distinction when we say "at the seaside" or "on the ocean"----I guess because we don't have seas--here, the ocean freezes only rarely, and we would not get ice formations like this--these formations are phenomenal!

all you need is a cold day ( -4°C will do just fine ) and some strong wind. The sea obviously wasn't frozen! *splash-splash* And our sea gets to freeze only in very low temperatures but that doesn't happen each year. It's more like once at 3 years or so... The ice formations are just like in the freezer a thick layer of ice over the concrete shapes.. (check out January 2005 in my gallery to see them without the ice) So... you must have icy shores even if the ocean doesn't freeze. Go find them!

Haha--I may live in Canada---but we have no icy shores here where I live---I would have to go much farther north for that!!

Marvellous! Great shot! Unique and exciting. Well done finding such a scene of ice and water at the same time. I like how you composed the photo, how you captured the spalshing of the wave, what shows that you are a good photographer. You capture feeling, motion and action at the same time. This picture reminds me of summer and the sea, especially the blue sky in the background, so to me this is an unexpected contrast between summer and winter, cold and heat. I like those weird formations of ice, the detail of the foreground and the moving water there(as a result of waves). This is a worthy photo, one of the best I have seen recently!!!

Wow--this is beautiful and amazing---is it ice formed in the ocean?

vulpul In reply to WindCrest [2005-02-07 07:33:06 +0000 UTC]

No, no ocean here... Just the Black Sea. Take a look on the map of Europe.. in the East Side. Romania is the country, Constanta is the place. The ice is over some concrete structures, hence the cool shapes. It's a pier on the sea shore.

Hey!!! The Robbie man! Thanks pal! The intense blue came out from the short exposure time. My G6 has the shortest time of 1/2000 and the maximum aperture when in full zoom is only 5.6. That's why I did this on a sunny day The timing was a matter of patience.. I took a lot of shots of this scene to have where to choose from. Nasty cold though. My fingers turned to ice.

Love the darkish colours caused by the slight underexposure in this one. Those rock/ice formations look awesome.
Nice capture indeed!

E prima data cand vad stabilopozi inghetati. Awesome.

The composition is the result of the selection procedure of about 10 images of the same scene with different waves... Thanks!
