Description
The Legendary Kingdom Key Keyblade In Kingdom Hearts.A simple commission that I enjoyed making. I should make my own.. This is way better than that one i bought off ebay forever ago >_>;
100% hand carved Pinewood. Leather wrapped handle. Metallic paints. To achieve different thicknesses, multiple layers were used.
If i had the time i would love to metal plate it >_>. That would take forever though and be much more costly.
View the Kingdom Key unpainted-->
Commissions begin in May and end in September. Please send a formal note if interested in commissions.

About metal plating⦠there's an easier way to go about it. I'm making my own Kingdom Key (to start) and I wanted to make it as accurate as possible. I did some research and found an electroplating company that was willing to plate it.
How electroplating works (for non conductive objects like wood): They coat the surface area to be plated with a resin, then a metal (usually silver) based paint. Then, they dip the object into a solution of the desired metal and plate the object via electrical current.
So if you're willing to make another non-painted Kingdom Key (paint can interfere with the resin) you could plate it with metal via electroplating. It's much easier than plating it by hand.

I have to say, you did a wonderful job on this piece. As far as metal plating goes, that wouldn't look that great. Now if you went with steel, I've had this idea myself. I have been welding for years but lack of funds, means that I can't get the materials. Many nights I've lain awake, trying to imagine how it would be done. You understand, sex changes are costly and this is a lucrative business.

I have a question. How did you get the dowel/rod part of it to look so smooth. I spray painted mine and it looks really rough. You can see every imperfection in the wood :/
Did you just sand in between coats?
PLEASE HELP ME D:

vvmasterdrfan In reply to TannerTelford22 [2012-06-23 13:38:35 +0000 UTC]
haha you have to prime first with guesso, then sand then paint. You have to sand with very fine paper - around 400 grit. Sometimes if you're not happy, you have to sand the first coat of paint with very fine paper and then reapply. The gold parts on my updated kingdom keys [link] have like 5 or 6 coats. which is a lot xD

I read your tutorial on how to make those other keyblades, but that used one sheet of plywood which doesn't look like will work in this case. How did you make this keyblade?
