Excellent tutorial! I plan on using it as a guide for making my own. I really loved the in-progress photos; that shows me a lot. Very well done. Only a couple things stood out that I wanted to ask about:
1. What size keychain hooks do you use?
2. On your original keyblade [kingdom key], how did you get the little grooves in the handle? Was that making individual divets, or was that some kind of covering?
I think the answers to those questions would help a great deal.
This tutorial overall is wonderful. Thanks for posting it, and great work! I can't wait to see more. Also, added you to my watch list. =3

Great tutorial. I do woodworking myself but if I hadn't any experience with it I would find this very easy to read and understand. Step by step directions flow very well.
If there is a way to smooth out the finer details, I would include that. Also I understand that it works for you or me but not everyone understands the "trace the screen image" idea. It could set them up for failure if they trace the whole image and then notice its the wrong size. If there was a way to print it out at the right size it would be much easier.
But besides that, all the other details are spot on. Great tutorial to making a great keyblade.

Thanks!
Yea the tracing idea is not for everyone. However, it's the most accurate way of transferring the keyblade onto the woof. Printing it out would make you cut it very carefully which would require you to use Xacto knives, as scissors would be too inaccurate to cut with. or having to go to a store to print on larger papers and what not. I have traced things before and realized its the wrong size. It's all part of the process. No one will get it right the first time. Just readjust the image and retrace.

I have recently just gotten into woodworking myself, and I have to say that this is very very well put together. This tutorial is easy to read, explains instructions well, and has lots of detailed pictures to let you see things visually.
The one problem I think needs to be fixed is that the keyblades you make turn out very rough looking. A good sanding and finish would easily fix this, and make the keyblades look like metal when painted. One thing I've learned in wood working is that even if sanding takes you a long time, it is always worth it in the end. But other than that, beautiful work, and wonderful tutorial!

This is by far the BEST tutorial i have seen on DA. I am really impressed with the way you work with the wood and i like how detailed these are. If i had to complain about something though, it would be that the handle seems like it would be hard to hold since it has the guard-peices on both sides, whereas a sword usually has only one.(i am assuming that is what they are). Other than that I really like it. I love how origional it is, and I have never seen anyone else on DA doing things like this with any kind of wood. Keep up the good work.

Definitely one of the best tutorials I've seen in a long time; careful consideration was put into making this just right, however the file is quote large; perhaps next time a separate tutorial for each? As far as the tutorial itself goes, excellent job on each keyblade, some areas seemed rough and maybe a bit quick to explain, but the pverall appearance seems to have come out well, especially for cosplay. This tutorial offers a good cost-effective use of plywood over metals, piping, etc. Provided that the maker has the proper tools. As the previous critiquer stated, perhaps some sanding could be used because it does indeed look a little rough, then again, that's all up to the makers own discretion.
Excellent job on these, and who knows, maybe I will be able to make something like your amazing keyblades using this tutorial (I hope so! xD )

Very excellent tutorial. One thing I would add to this though, is that the finish pieces, the wood still looks a little messy (My wording sucks, ignore that) But what I mean is perhaps take the time to sand down edges and just in general, most of the areas. Maybe round off Roxas's key blade handle (where the checkers are) A little bit more. It looks really flat and uncomfortable to hold at the moment. I would love to see more Work-In-Progress' in the future though. By the way, where exactly did you get those paints? Keep up the good work.

vvmasterdrfan In reply to C-Hadley [2009-04-01 10:31:46 +0000 UTC]
Thank you
Some pieces do look rough i agree, and needed to be sanded more, however, there were times when i tried to sand and yet that still left it bumpy (but smooth) and it didn't really help.
Roxas' keyblade handle was purposely not rounded off. i did see a few examples where it was, and i didn't like it. It was distracting to the image and was not true to the true look of that keyblade. so i left it flat. I wasn't looking for comfort lol.
I really wish i had taken more pictures and shown deeper techniques in how i made it though.
I bought the paints from a local art supply store that had special paints.
Thanks again for the critique ^_^

What's the budget for a keyblade, an approximate
π: 0 β©: 1
vvmasterdrfan In reply to louize93 [2016-03-15 21:03:04 +0000 UTC]
I guess it depends on what tools you already have. It could cost really cheap if you have most of these items.
The most costly, however is your time.

but i have a question, do you know some material for cover the wood?
something that gives the wood a better look?
something plastic like texture?

Simply put, this is just pure genius. It lays everything out for anyone to understand and keeps it simple even when dealing with complex parts and intricate details. But on the whole, your work has been improving particularly your painting. Could you tell me just how the hell you managed to make the metallic finish look so genuine? I have been trying for weeks and every sword I make just looks like metal spray paintΒ instead ofΒ actual metal.

On the whole, this is by far one of the most useful tutorials on any weaponry I've found so far. The great thing is that you can apply this to ANY weapons, not just Keyblades. Spledid. Simply splendid. I've been in love with your work since I found your Xigbar Arrowguns by chance, and I can't wait to see what else you do in the future.
I do have questions, though. I'm planning on cosplaying Aqua in full armor sans helmet, and I was wondering if you had any hints/help for both the armor and the keychains for her Keyblades, Rainfell and Stormfall.
π: 0 β©: 1
vvmasterdrfan In reply to AzuraRayume [2013-10-13 13:54:45 +0000 UTC]
Thanks so much!! You really can apply it to most weapons which is great.
Thanks for liking my arrowguns! they were pretty hard Β to make all by hand
Aquas stormfall and rainfell are pretty straightforward, simple angled pieces. I would cut out small parts of the keyblade so you can craft a test piece that way you wont feel as if you're going to mess up. don't forget patience! the more patient you are, the better your keyblade becomes
As for armor.. i'd start with paper craft to get the proportions and sizing correct on your body before molding it from expensive plastics.
Hope this helps!

I'm so heartbroken that I just found your DA today- how could I have missed such wonderful work for all this time?!
