This is so awesome! 8D Definitely gonna be needing this soon...

What kind of wood did you use by the way? Is it easy to cut through? I'm pretty new with the jigsaw, and it feels so big and clumsy, so it's hard to imagine cutting out all those tiny wings and curled tips. XD

Thanks! I used red oak, but it's a hardwood. If you're looking for something easy to carve, try pine or mdf. If you want something sturdy and lighter than oak, try poplar.

simply amazing (^.^)b
if i may ask, what exact primer do you get, and what gloss?
does it matter if they are a different brand?

sorry my stupid app made me click a link....anyway, krylon primer takes a few coats to completely cover because it doesnt apply very well. i would use rustoleum, but it only has the 2x primer thing where i live, so i'm not sure if it's also a paint and i dont trust it. if i had a choice i would choose a normal rustoleum primer. i also use rustoleum automotive heat and water resistant gloss.

I've never seen them in a six pack before, but if it's rustoleum primer then sure

Lol, well i usually use finished plywood, but if you want a really nice smooth finish you can get some red oak in the crown moulding section. Be warned, oak is a hard wood so it would take some time to carve, whereas the finished plywood is soft and has no hard spots in the wood. It can be flimsy if it's too thin though.

finished plywood, flimzy if too thin, what size should i get?

finaformsora In reply to Savageman1041 [2013-04-18 22:11:46 +0000 UTC]

Well first i have to tell you that wood usually isnt the exact thickness that the label says. The label is the milled thickness, or how thick or long it would be if the wood was cut with paper thin blades. Usually the board you are buying is at least 1/8" less or more.

So with that in mind. I usually get 1" boards which actually turn out to be 3/4". If they had a perfect " i would get it, just be sure to bring a measuring device with you to be sure of the dimensions. Too thin would be maybe 1/8-1/4" thick for the finished plywood. The dense pine plywood may fare better, but i find that it chips more and is harderto carve. The red oak is still pretty strong at 1/4" and that's as thin as i can buy it locally.

Wow that looks like really tough and long work! Kudos to you the keys look amazin! I never know which dremel bits to use on my projects, which ones can you recommend for the sharp, clean edges you got?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

finaformsora In reply to Misstymeeadows [2012-12-14 04:07:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! All you have to do is be confident and it's not so hard. I always use sanding bands. Just use low grit and gradually get to high grit, then maybe some steel wool to make it really smooth.

I really like this tutorial!!! I personally prefer to use wood carving knives, it gives a decent amount of control when you're carving. Although, I have never used painted on primer.. I may try that, so thank you for that idea!!

finaformsora In reply to imtheguywhocolors [2012-10-19 04:52:56 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to try using knives or chisels, but the dremel i use has speed control so its not so hard to control.

I believe they sell them at most walmarts, home depot's or lowes. If you decide to get one, its best to get one of the higher series. They cost a little more, but they last longer too, trust me

HOORAY! Thank you so much for the tutorial!

I'm not sure if you'll know this, since you carve your keyblades from wood, but would you happen to know where to find a foam board piece large/thick enough to make a decent keyblade out of? They have some at my local Michael's store, but they're both too think and too short :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

finaformsora In reply to QueenAllyJean [2012-07-08 05:09:24 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, not really, they may have some a home depot in the insulation section. I was acually going to make my keys out of foam board before i tried wood.
