Description
As promised, here is a step-by-step guide to how I made my Keyblade . I know that a lot of you do not know how to use SolidWorks, but I hope that you enjoy going through the process with me! Dimensions are included if you want them, though they may be a bit large. The original can be found here: [link]
The program used to create this was SolidWorks 2008.

How did you mate the chain links to the sword and to each other?

I just manually positioned the chains and used the 'fix' mate to lock their position.

High gloss, if I had to guess. Play around with the options and lighting until you find a material that you like.

Hi, how do you add the polished gold and gloss blue and all those things? I'm not sure how to get to where I need to be to do it.

If you have PhotoWorks installed along with your copy of SolidWorks, you fist need to make sure that it's in use; you can do this by going to the add-ins menu on the top bar. On the right of the screen, there should be a little tab for PhotoWorks. Click there and browse through the different materials. Once you find one you want, you can just drag it onto the feature you want in the feature tree on the left.
If you don't have PhotoWorks, you might be able to change the color or the feature in question by adjusting the appearances for that feature. Unfortunately, I no longer have SolidWorks installed on my computer, so I can't check on that for you, but I hope one of these two methods works for you. Good luck!

Hey, that looks really good! Congratulations!
It seems like you need to change the lighting options for your render. The materials (from here) look good, so try changing the ambient lighting and directional lighting in the photoworks menu. Whenever I have to render something, it takes me a long time to find the combination of materials and lighting that gives me what I want. If you can't seem to make the lighting options work, try making modifications to the materials.
Good luck, and please keep me updated on your progress!

I do not believe I mated the parts of the assembly together. I moved them until they were where I wanted and used the 'fix' command to ensure that they did not move.
Please let me know if this helps you.

the chain must've been a bitch to make
a few bits of advice: round off all corners and turn on perspective when you render(or edit the camera).
nice and clear tutorial though

Yeah, I did this really early in my SolidWorks career, so I didn't know better XD
But thanks for the advice! I take it you use SW too?

Yellow-Fish In reply to JoeCoool [2012-02-26 19:11:31 +0000 UTC]
yeah i use SW too, but i don't really use deviantart anymore.
i looked at your other solidworks stuff, pretty neat, very technically detailed!
i use SW mostly for the rendering, rather than technical stuff(which it's actually meant for).

I don't have any actual dimensions; I just looked at another deviation and copied the shape to the best of my abilities.
