I love the Sonic games. They were classic and groundbreaking in their own way, but Mario was always better. Sure, the old Sonic games were great, but Mario revolutionized platform gaming so much more, and Sonic owed him for it. After all, Sonic was marketed as a "cooler" version of Mario in an annoying antagonistic ad campaign.
Mario games overall are consistently great (Sunshine notwithstanding), especially at multiplayer spinoffs. I don't know about the new Sonic games, though; I'm mostly out of the loop [groan, I did not mean to do that] with them. The only ones I've played are Shadow (which I love) and Secret Rings (which I hate).

But the thing is, I actually like Sonic better and I do more fanart of him. The reason is SatAM. It may have been based on a video game, but it was actually a very good cartoon that broke away from the game. It was far more dark and poignant than Saturday Morning cartoons were expected to be, and had well developed characters. It also developed Sonic as a character with emotions and a personality that I could relate to. (In the Sega continuity he is what I would call a "benevolent sociopath")

Honestly, even if you're not a big fan of the Sonic games or video games in general, I suggest you check out SatAM any way. Especially if you like good cartoons.
