I like Knuckles. I like him because he's a badass, or at least he's supposed to be.

In Sonic 3, Knuckles may have been duped by Eggman into fighting Sonic, but it wasn't because he was stupid, it was because he lived in an isolated environment and there was no way he could have known better. The instruction manual even describes him as a "clever" adversary, and he was a cunning opponent who was one step ahead of you.

Still everyone accepts that he's stupid, and lazy writers have Flanderized him into a fool. Most frustratingly is in Sonic X, where he just keeps falling for the same lame lies by Eggman over and over because...? It's not funny. It's turning a cool character into a retard for cheap laughs.

It's much better in the comics, where he is portrayed as intelligent, and he has other members of his own race to interact with. Unfortunately, they sometimes make him possessed by some force which makes him go on some rampage when they can't think of another better story. Come on, he's a hero who made one mistake, that doesn't mean he should be the go-to guy for a Monster of the Week.
