ArtIII 5th Six Weeks Assignment 2PREVIOUS: [link]
NGGGHHHH I THINK STARFIGHTER IS TAKING OVER MY LIFE FFFFFFFFF. AND I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I FINISHED THIS THE NIGHT THAT HAMMIE POSTED A PAGE. IT WAS LIKE. PHENOMENAL. TOTAL COINCIDENCE. SERENDIPITY DUDE.
In a sad attempt to escape my imprisonment (my mom grounded me from drawing. FROM DRAWING, WHAT.), I drew STARFIGHTER. For my art assignment. .___. I'm a pitiful being. -sobsob-
I actually started doodling at 6PM on Tuesday, the night before my assignment was due, and I was like, "man, I wish I could draw something I really wanted instead of this stupid project." Commence with the brainstorm and BAM! I sketched out two thumbnail drawings of Cain and Abel, unintentionally. You could probably guess that I used them for class (and if you couldn't, I fear for your mental health). It took until 1 to finish it. x___x Shading was a pain in the ass, but it was worth it. : )
Argh, but I'm so disappointed. My teacher didn't like it at all, and she scolded me for not using my original characters.
I'LL STOP COMPLAINING NOW. llllOTL
The following paragraph(s) is what I was required to write in order to explain the motive behind my work. It's kind of annoying really, because I really like to see people's interpretation first, without the little background info. :/
"Scary Animals"
In a (perhaps fruitless) attempt to kill two birds with one stone [I have to make 2 drawings per 2 weeks], I created a pair of pages which could be read in a sequence, or separately if you wish: the first, "Safe Port in a Storm," and then "Scary Animals." I wanted to use these themes in a non-literal sense, but figurative language requires....language, so it inspired me to make a comic --- something that conveys both art and an adequate amount of dialogue. These pieces [pages 1 and 2] are unlike the other sketchbook assignments I've done considering that previously I would draw a single scene with inserted dialogue. I hope they are to your liking. : )
These two characters are Cain and Abel, named cleverly for their completely opposite personalities. Their story is set in a space war in which their main goal is to obtain territory (AKA other planets) for colonization. I admit, these two are not my original idea at all, however, I felt compelled to draw this comic because the nature of the original STARFIGHTER comic intrigued me. I wanted to portray their characters as obviously as possibly, more than anything else actually, since their creator [HamletMachine] did such a wonderful job in doing so in her own work. Hopefully I did them justice! : D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the second page, you must infer a little to connect the theme to the page. "Scary animals" can refer to the whole "dog-eat-dog" deal, but I wanted that view to shift to Cain's animalistic behavior, especially when Abel calls him a "wolf."
To explain further, I used "dog-eat-dog" as an allusion to the original STARFIGHTER. Often Cain, and other Fighters like him, are called "dogs" by Abel's fellow Navigators. These two groups have very distinguishing features, such as hair color and levels of self-control. Fighters are generally very pleasure-seeking and rather belligerent in contrast to Navigators, who are more meek and tend to treat problems diplomatically. There are outliers, but these characteristics are the norm in most Fighters and Navi's.
If "dogs" refer to Fighters, why is Cain considered a "wolf"? This is not necessarily true, but it shows that Abel fears Cain, his partner, more than anyone else in this war, which is a little scary since he is the only fallback Abel has in this empty space war. From the beginning, Abel has been rather wary of Cain, even if they have some mutual respect (if any. I have a feeling that Cain respects Abel's abilities as much as Abel respects Cain's, but it hasn't really shown --- I mean, we only have the first two chapters here!) for each other.I'm hoping that their relationship will change in the near future, but it's not likely! xD
On another note, happy birthday HamletMachine!
I don't even know how I didn't realize this until now lllllorz
Lol I hated a lot of my art projects that I had to do and my teachers never really liked my work :/
Ouch cruel punishment from your mom for banning you from drawing!
Nice work on their uniforms and the eyes. You have very nice line work
Yeah, I didn't realize how much of a problem that would be until this year. D: Normally, I wouldn't care, but I think the reason might be that I'd really like to gain her respect,to impress her at least a little bit. : / Sometimes she's impressed, but it's over the little details like 'foreshortening' and 'reflective lighting' that I guess she doesn't expect from someone my age. xD
Apparently, the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights doesn't protect me from my own parents!
I think you said that already, but thank you again~ : 3
Yeah I know what you mean, but I'm sure that even though she may not say it she is proud of you
No problem! I was just a little surprised that you would like it enough to say it twice. xD
Haha, I think it's kind of strange for an art teacher to feel proud of her student, but thank you for your sweet words. It really lightened up my day. : 3
Lmao haha.
Ouo I thought you were talking about getting respect from your mother? Unless your mom is your art teacher? Either way if your art teacher is a nice person then I'm sure she will be, my school teacher was, however you do get the bad teachers but thats the way things go I guess, anyway, I wish you good luck with your school work! And I shall stop pestering you now X3
Whoa, wait a second! Sorry for the misunderstanding. xDDD I meant that I would like to earn some respect (as an artist) from my teacher. My mother could care less about what I draw (of course, she doesn't really know what I draw, nor has the knowledge about art to appreciate the tiny details I mentioned before!).
My teacher isn't bad, just...picky. xD I think that's the word!
Thank you, and good luck to you too, for whatever challenges you face!
