"Hand me one a them nightcrawlers," Shyanne pointed to the white styrofoam container full of bait in his hand.

Ken plucked out a wriggling one, offered it to her, then before she could take it, teasingly jerked his arm above his head and out of her reach. "Nope. Kiss tax."

"Kiss tax? Just what are you playin' at?" Shyanne tried to match his mock-deadpan expression with one of her own, but she found herself grinning instead.

"'S only fair. One worm, one kiss. That's the rate. Better pay up," Ken intoned, raising the worm higher, shaking it warningly.

Shyanne planted her hand on her hip and shifted her weight, shrugging back from him. "My kisses are worth way more than a stupid ol' nightcrawler. Besides, what's gotten into you? You were never this way when I knew you in high school."

"That's because I was way dumber in high school. Back then, I shoulda been finding all sorts of excuses to kiss you but I didn't. I guess I didn't know what a good thing I had when I had it. I let it slip away. And now, I can see that what I was missing was you." Ken's eyes stung. He blinked rapidly, surprised that all those words had tumbled from his mouth in that exact order. He felt lighter inside now. So much so that he was in danger of flying away if something didn't happen.

Shyanne reached out and grabbed his shirt like the tether he needed, pulled him against her body. She was perfumed with sunblock and mosquito spray, her golden curls smelling deliciously of apple blossoms. She craned her neck out, eyes half lidded, bringing him in closer, draping him over the curvature of her belly and against the pillowy softness of her breast. Her lips grazed his stubble-studded cheek with a restrained peck. "That's about a worm's worth of kiss. So hand it over, tax man." Stunned, he complied. "Keep playin' your cards right, and there'll be more where that came from. I aim to make up for lost time." In the bright sun her smile was warm and radiant. "Now let's fish!"
