Description Mario created using 50k pixel hobby beads. I did not time myself but I would guess it took a little under 100 hours to get done.

Original image used was done by Pixeloo

Edit: Updated photo, old one was a bit skewed, quarter added for scale.

Crazy stuff! Just shows how even the few colors given with beads can approximate full-color pictures like this one. I have a degree in 3D animation so it's really neat to see how the two professions come together: an image which was originally a 3D render from a computer is now recreated in real pixels and framed. I'd love to buy this if I had the money!

Sorry, this one is made out of pixel hobby beads. Takes about 4 of them to cover the same area as perler beads. They also come in more colors which is why it looks more detailed. They are just more expensive, which is the main fault with them.

It is so detailed! I didn't even look like it was made out of perler beads when I first saw it!

It's not perler beads, it is Pixel Hobby beads, they are about about 1/4 as big as perler beads and don't have the hole all the way through. They also come in tons more colors.

Only downside is they are a lot more expensive. About 2x as much per beads. Or 8x as much per area covered (since it takes 4 beads to equal the area of 1 perler beaad). A big portion of the costs comes from the pegboards which are not reusable and become part of the project.

Geez, that looks amazing, great work. The color palette is clearly better than you get from fuse beads. Unfortunately these are quite a bit more expensive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wacker00 In reply to EternalBarrel [2013-02-12 14:31:56 +0000 UTC]

Yep, the price of these things is high, but it takes longer to get one one done, so over time it somewhat evens out. At least that is what I tell myself.

The good thing is, there is not really much you can't do. I have only run across a few things that I couldn't get to look decent.
