Indeed! Just imagine if Sesame Street was set realistically! Snuffy would probably act like an elephant, big bird would probably be a carnivorous terror bird with a taste for humans, and all the "monsters" would likely behave like wild animals or something. In a nutshell, it wouldn't be as pleasant as on the show.

I don't know how many people actually remember this, but Snuffy actually started out as Big Bird's imaginary friend, but he was only imaginary because nobody else had seen when Big Bird did.

The long running gag was that only Big Bird would see Mr Snuffleupagus. Adults would always just miss him. (I think one time Bob saw him, but Snuffy was wearing striped pajamas, so later Big Bird didn't recognize Bob's description of a striped creature as being Mr Snuffleupagus.)
Eventually it was decided that they might be sending the wrong message of adults not believing Big Bird, so it was finally revealed that Snuffy was real.
