Description
The corset is custom-made and fully-boned. It is completely functional, and is overlaid with 4 sheets of dragonscale chainmaille (1 front, 1 back each side). Since this weave is very dense the sheets ended up 1/4" thick! Combined with all the layers in a corset, it becomes nearly 1/2" thick in places.I wanted a very clean look for this corset, so I hand-stitched faux boning channels to secure the maille and hide the raw edges. This was the most time-consuming and frustrating part of the process, as it was very difficult to cleanly pass a needle through 5 layers of cotton and 1/4" of dragonscale. Close-up view
The rings I used were 16g 3/8" and 1/4" aluminum, nearly 5000 total. Even with the relatively light weight of aluminum, this corset still weighs over 5 pounds.
It took about a year to complete, and at least 200 man-hours - probably longer but I didn't keep track. 2/3 of the time was spent attaching the faux channels. Throughout the year there was one muslin fitting, one final corset fitting, and 3 fittings to be sure I wasn't going to stress the chainmaille once the corset was cinched.
The skirt, also custom, is a wool-blend fabric with color-matched satin lining. It doesn't happen too often, but in this case the color matched the rings *perfectly*. The styling is very simple, hanging straight from the hips with a dramatic slit at the side-front seam.
The matching jewelry is a pair of half-persian 3 in 1 earrings, and what turned out to be a very elaborate choker with a single spike in the center (more on the choker here)
I'd definitely like to try other ways of meshing corsets and maille, but I will probably never do it again in dragonscale because of the staggering time needed.

That's what I figured.
The one time I did try chain mail, I had on a flannel shirt.
It was easy to get om.
But a bitch to get off, seeing as it was so heavy.

You've got to be f***ing insane to do that in dragonscale. xD
Maybe next time you could do a japanese 8-1 over a satin shell. That would look nice.

that's how I felt when I was halfway through it! I didn't know any better, I hadn't done maille at all before this (lots of backtracking because of it, of course). I knew I liked dragonscale, and I have a penchant for jumping in the deep end of the pool without first learning to swim!

It's a lot of fun though, once you get into it and get past the learning curve. I've mostly done just jewelry type things though, nothing near this intricate. xD
A well deserved DD, if only because you're crazy enough to do this. Not to mention that it's really pretty. =3

I greatly admire you for taking on dragonscale. It's got to be one of the hardest weaves I've come across (that and Turkish round, but that's another rant for another day). What's the metal and gauge, if you don't mind me asking. My problem with it is always that it's too thick!
This is a piece the epitomizes my own struggles to blend cloth and maille. The fact you have done so it cleanly and elegantly despite a lot of frustration is incredible motivation to accomplish my own artwork.
This is very deserving of admiration and awe. Congratulations; It's gorgeous.

thanks for such adoration!
It's 16g 3/8" and 1/4"
Believe it or not, the weaving didn't take relatively too much time. It was hiding the raw edges under the fabric that was the nasty surprise in making this! I'm gonna do it again, but not in DS that's for sure!

Well deserved admiration.
After watching a friend struggle with a sheet of 20g DS in titanium (it was hilarious), you are fully deserving of admiration.
Ooh...japanese pattern might be nice with a contrasting material underneath. Did I briefly read you were on M.A.I.L.?

both the corset and the rings are beautiful. x
one awesome thing about this is that you look so realistic - not idealized or stylized but truly realistic. :thumbs up:

I think this is incredible. Being a corset lover myself, I can certainly appreciate the simpleness of the design and the complicated "creation" process.
I would love to see the back of the corset!

Holy hells, that is *amazing*. I've watched a good friend of mine, Jo Lavey, make corsets before and i know the amount of time and effort they contain... but this is just *mindblowing*. I'm somewhat of a corset fan myself and i'd like to know how much of a reduction you could get with one of these.
You get a +fav and watch from me hun, stunning stuff xx

WaistedSpace In reply to TheOtherXiao [2007-05-01 22:29:08 +0000 UTC]
Thanks the corset doesn't give much reduction, but the model is pretty skinny anyway. It really needs to be broken in, but she still gets about an inch with it

Did you use steel boning or plastic? Either way, for a corset that is mainly made of metal, 1" is still damn impressive. Had a shufty through your gallery and you have some awe-inspiring pieces hun. Keep up the good work!

WaistedSpace In reply to TheOtherXiao [2007-05-01 22:43:44 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the encouragement
It's all steel boning throughout. There's even a busk underneath the chainmaille, which sits on top like a sort of flap

TheOtherXiao In reply to WaistedSpace [2007-05-01 22:48:20 +0000 UTC]
A busk too? I guess it'd be like a modesty panel, but for the front! The logistics of putting something like that together are mindbending. Totally worth the hours involved though
