Personally I see it as symbolism of the once peaceful live Itachi once knew slowly shattering as he would later have to commit the ultimate sacrifice.

If anything, Itachi is the classic case of the tragic hero. He knows that by going through with his mission to stop the Uchiha uprising, he'll be betraying and killing friends, family, loved ones as well as being portrayed as a ruthless villain. Itachi also knows that if he sides with his clan, the Uchiha would start a civil war in Konoha that would ultimately end in total bloodshed as well as utter destruction of the village and Land of Fire.
So he picks the path of becoming a devil for the greater good of Konoha. His peaceful life has been shattered as well as his innocence. That's why he's one of my favorite characters in all of Naruto.
