Description
1. Try a really soft, chunky wool - you might not even have to straighten it and you need to use less wool!
2. Tie your fluffs into the braid instead of around it to stop them from sliding down the base!
3. Try separating the wool strands before brushing to prevent knots.
Total time: ~5 hours+ depending on length

Zulala has a buncha time on her hands I think because stitching every piece takes longer then 8 hours.

Its taking me forever to do mine :c (I made mine super thick and using slightly different ways with the knots so they won't slip much) I've so far gone into 1 hour and barely have anything past the base tuft..... :/ Also its really difficult to completely fluff out the yarn :c

Yarn tails aren't easy and you certainly have to be patient. Sewing a tail with faux fur is much faster but you don't get the customization options. Making a yarn tail is akin to wefting your own wig from scratch.

I have a question, how many skeins of yarn did you use?
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to Rainfeather83 [2014-02-19 18:12:02 +0000 UTC]
It will depend on the size of the skein, but mine didn't even use the whole one you see in the photo. Unfortunately I don't remember the size of that one, but it wasn't super large!

Looks awesome I'm going to try it out once I get my yarn. I have some yarn, but it's not the correct colour and it's not 100% acrylic. I got a straightener and lots of cat brushes, I have 2 fluffy Persian cats which look like those tails xD

Idk about making the core out of wire I feel like the yarn might slide off but you could probably add wire to the yarn core before adding the fur.Β

Hey there! Would using shorter strands of yarn produce a shorter fur at the end? Or would that not work with the process because it's too short?
I love yarn tails, but I feel like this is more for longhaired cats, rather than cheetahs or big cats.
So could this be used to make a shorthaired tail, is what I'm trying to ask in my own deranged, word-challenged way.

WarmSummerSun In reply to CarnivalKitten [2014-02-19 18:14:03 +0000 UTC]
lunarthief3 pretty much summed it up, but basically the shorter the fluffs the more likely you'll see the knots and spaces between them. For short-haired animals you may be better off sewing the tail out of faux fur and airbrushing it. Let me know if you give it a try, though!

lunarthief3 In reply to CarnivalKitten [2014-02-01 06:17:43 +0000 UTC]
You can it just takes a lot longer and don't space in between the fur you tie on or you will be able to see the gap.

I'm making a green and white tail right now. It's taken me about two hours to brush and I've only have a few fuzzy thingies ;-; I don't have a cat brush, and I'm using one of those giant metal brushes you use to scrub the pavement with.

It is definitely a slow process, but a cat brush helps a lot. They're only a few dollars at a pet store or dollar store!

What is wrong with Red Heart brand? I've made a bunch of tails with it. Even plan to sell them. I just don't use a heat plate on them, I like them puffy. :3
I just want to be sure selling them wont rip anyone off. D: They don't deteriorate do they?

I use red heart and use heat to straighten my tails and they're fine. I have heard you loose more yarn from brushing red heart brand than other brands but that's the only thing I've heard about it.

Hello! Yarn tail enthusiast who happened to stumble on this comment!
When you initially brush Red Heart to 'unbraid' it, it tends to rip away more and leave more 'fluff' than other brands.
Try using a different brand, such as Lion Brand's 'Homeland' series. That's my personal favorite, but any brand that's not recycled material and is 100% acrylic works just as good!
Nothing is wrong with RH, but there's better quality and softer yarns out there!

Thanks.
I didn't even know that posted. My computer mega lagged when I hit post, I waited ten minutes, hit post again, waited again, got bored and shut the computer off. XD
I saw another person who made a tail with RedHeart yarn, and they heat straitened the fur and said they had no issues with it.
The only thing I noticed is the fur isn't as soft as other brands.

Another yarn tail maker recommends "I Love This Yarn", "Caron Simply Soft", and Lion Brand. They say avoid Red Heart (one of the biggest brands), and avoid any yarns made from recycled plastic bottles as the result isn't great. (Source: serenitymoonwolf.deviantart.co⦠)

If it's knotting up, you probably aren't brushing from the tips to the roots. Try brushing just the last half inch of yarn and slowly moving up in half inch increments until the whole thing is brushed out.

How did you tie the knots for the core and to hold the 'floofs' together prior to brushing?
(Not good at tying knots at the end of braids -LOL I JUST TAOED ONE END AND TRIED MY BEST WITH THE OTHER- but I would like to know how you tied the knot in the center of all the yarn pieces.
Thank you in advance !

WarmSummerSun In reply to SHINeeShawol24 [2013-09-04 18:10:15 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, at first I didn't understand this but I think I might now? It's like tying a knot in a cherry stem:Β Picture Β You just grab both ends and wrap them, then pull both ends REALLY tight and try to get the knot as close to the center as possible. As for the one at the end of the braid, same idea but leave the knot at the end of the braid. I hope that helps!

LOL I hope it works. My dad gave me a wire brush, but it looks like this:Β www.harborfreight.com/media/caβ¦
do these kinds still work? It's a little hard to brush because the bristles are so spaced out.
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to SHINeeShawol24 [2013-09-06 05:38:39 +0000 UTC]
Hmm! I think it will be difficult, but you could try brushing *downwards* instead of with the side of the brush so that more bristles run over the yarn as you brush it. If you have trouble with this brush, you can also try a regular hair brush or even a comb. (Or try a pet store for the slicker brush)

Is there a way you could go over how you made the core of the tail? I'm having a little trouble understanding how you tied the floofs on.
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to scarletpelt [2013-08-20 19:37:58 +0000 UTC]
Hello! I take maybe 9 pieces of yarn and braid them together (so 3 groups of 3) into a big thick braid. Then I just tied the floofs around it with a tight knot. This isn't really strong enough to keep them in place, so I recommend you either thread them through the braid and then tie them on, or tie them and hand-stitch them in place later.
