Description
1. Try a really soft, chunky wool - you might not even have to straighten it and you need to use less wool!
2. Tie your fluffs into the braid instead of around it to stop them from sliding down the base!
3. Try separating the wool strands before brushing to prevent knots.
Total time: ~5 hours+ depending on length

For a fox tail, I would probably make the fluffs about the same size, but tie a WHOLE lot more in there. Make it a super fluffy beast. As for ears, I would maybe make a base from foam or cardboard or some such, and hot glue the fluffs on. Ears a lot easier to make from faux fur fabric, however. Let me know how it comes out

Another thing is you can use 100% acrylic yarn and it doesnt have as much fluff and stuff coming off them.

When I make my yarn tails, I tie them in threes or twos along the base very close together. It makes them look awesome and it saves you having to use needle and thread. Thats just my take on them and I have only made two so far, a white one and a three toned blue one. Both are wayyyyyy longer then yours but they look awesome. Anyway thats just a tip hun. And I seperate the strands sometimes before brushing.

I want to make one to wear for Halloween but what would happen to it if it started raining and got wet?
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to KawaiiMidnight [2013-07-24 04:35:01 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't worry about the rain my friend, especially if it's acrylic yarn. Acrylic is practically plastic. It may dry a little wavy, but you can always take the hair straightener to it again once its all together (it's just more difficult). Sometimes it looks cute wavy anyway I would love to see your tail when it's done!!

Does a regular brush work ok? and does the yarn have to be wool-like, or can you use regular thin yarn?
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to CielPhantomhive1136 [2013-07-24 04:36:00 +0000 UTC]
Hello! This tends to work better with chunkier yarn, but mine wasn't super thick (1mm maybe?) and it worked just fine. The thinner the yarn, the more strands you need to put in your floofies. A regular brush will probably take longer but will accomplish the same thing. The cat brush has so many thin bristles that it only takes a few strokes and you've brushed out the whole thing.

Thanks! I just finished mine, I used the same thin yarn, and a regular brush. You were right about brushing would take longer, but it turned out great! My only problem is that it looks choppy so I have to brush it down a lot. But other than that it was great, thanks for the tutorial! I'm using this tail for my Loveless (anime/manga) cosplay!

I tried this (before seeing this)
And it just kept falling apart. :I
Maybe it was the wrong yarn.
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to Lacebug [2013-07-13 04:42:07 +0000 UTC]
How exactly does it fall apart? Did the yarn itself pull apart or did the knots come undone?

Lacebug In reply to WarmSummerSun [2013-07-13 05:38:27 +0000 UTC]
Would this still work with wool?
I don't know if the yarn is wool or acrylic. ;_;
Imma try and figure it out.

WarmSummerSun In reply to Lacebug [2013-07-13 15:49:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it depends how it reacts with the brush and the straightener. Even amongst my acrylic yarns, some reacted differently to the heat. Give it a try and let me know!

Lacebug In reply to WarmSummerSun [2013-07-13 17:48:30 +0000 UTC]
Alright.
They are both acrylic but... melty acrylics. I decided to burn a small strip of them to see if they were wool of acrylic and the fused to the side walk.
Neither of the yarns are doing that great, anyways. I think I'll buy a different brand/kind.
Wonderful tutorial!

No, I think It was too long.
I have 1 foot long pieces and just.. huge chunks would just unstring and fall out.
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to Lacebug [2013-07-13 15:49:28 +0000 UTC]
If unstringing is the problem, you'll need to sew them in instead of just tying them.

I started a yarn tail based on this tutorial, and I have to say, I am MASSIVELY impressed so far. Not only is this a great hands on project to keep busy, but it's going to be awesome for making simple wigs for the button jointed dolls I'm making!
Thanks so much for posting this, I'll make sure to put up pictures of my proof of concepts when they're finished.

I'm honestly super duper happy how this turned out, I'm going to make at least two more in the near future; A blue meezer for a friend of mine in Seattle, and a red-orange curled tail for myself. Still not sure how I'm going to pull off the curl, but it'll be a fun experiment.

Three days and a full skein of thick chunky black wool, but sooooo worth it.
I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease in the Super Bulky size 6, it brushed out really nicely and gave me some really good leftover material to use for stuffing for some plushies I'm going to be making. I've ordered more of the stuff for my two other projects, I am so looking forward to playing with them. :3

thanks for the tutorial! i have no idea how this took you 5 hrs though because it was my first time making it and it's about 21 inches and it took me about 15 hours... i'm making it for cosplay and i need 9 of them, i think i'll die! i just learned i don't need to brush it out so throughly and it'll still look fine.

I have a question. I'm using 4 (thickness) yarn. Should I be getting 5 or 6? And also, I haven't touched yarn ever so I'm just learning this to learn it. Should I only be weaving two pieces of yarn as the core or three?
