Description
1. Try a really soft, chunky wool - you might not even have to straighten it and you need to use less wool!
2. Tie your fluffs into the braid instead of around it to stop them from sliding down the base!
3. Try separating the wool strands before brushing to prevent knots.
Total time: ~5 hours+ depending on length

I hate to keep bugging you, but I am nearly done with my tail! I cannot figure out a good way to connect it to my belt though. What method did you use?

WarmSummerSun In reply to ChiObsidian [2013-05-02 17:05:56 +0000 UTC]
No problem!! Any sort of loops will work, so you could thread a few strands of yarn through the braid and just tie them in a loop at the top. Safety pins would work too. At my local fabric store they sell these 1.5" rings that open up and lock, that would be a cool way to do it.

Wow this is great, I can't wait to try it out. I do have a question though about the core of the tail. You mention making a braid. How many strands of yarn do you braid, if I want the same thickness as the one in the tutorial?

WarmSummerSun In reply to ChiObsidian [2013-04-21 18:36:58 +0000 UTC]
Hey there!! I just looked around for my tail to count them but I couldn't find it >.< However, I am *pretty* positive that I used 6 strands total, 2 in each section of the braid. If you have a thinner wool, maybe 3 in each section (9 total). Also, I had an idea recently that might be worth trying out - I figure if you do a looser braid for the core of the tail, you can feed the tie-strings of the "fluffs" right through the spaces in the loose braid and tie then on that way, the idea being that because they're going THROUGH the braid rather than around it, they'd be more likely to stay firmly in place instead of sliding down (as I ended up manually sewing mine on afterwards) - just a thought!

Would this work for a Maine Coon tail? Me and my best friend are going to be cat's for Halloween and Maine Coon is one of her favorite cats.

WarmSummerSun In reply to TripleMoonStudios [2013-04-03 17:38:42 +0000 UTC]
Should do!! For a Maine Coon, I would say use a thick yarn and use LOTS of fluffs. Pack them right in there, more frequently than my "One each side" method. You can always add more in later ofcourse too, if you don't quite have that super thick look. Maine Coons are gorgeous animals!!

agh... so thats where i went wrong with mine! i always stopped at the middle stages of the brushing thinking it would turn so bitsy.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to Technotick [2013-04-02 05:20:16 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, don't worry about losing tons of fluffies to the brush. It's inevitable. You could always put more strands of wool per "Fluff". Starting brushing at the ends and working towards the knot helps it brush neatly.

ahh ok i have made a rabbit tail which turned out nicely though i used a chain as the core, it was very natural looking. though did you just plait your core, also how did you entwine the two loose wool strings into the core?

WarmSummerSun In reply to Technotick [2013-04-03 17:41:18 +0000 UTC]
Ooooh, this is a great idea for a rabbit tail! I would love to see the finished product A chain is a nice idea, especially for a cat tail, because it will have that nice weight to it. The core of mine is simply a thick braid of wool. The two loose strings were used to tie the fluffs in knots along the core, but this turned out to be a bad idea because with brushing and wear they eventually slide down, so later I hand sewed them on.

When making Yarn tails, is there a specific size of yarn people are suppose to use when making it.Or does the size of the yarn only affect how big the tail will turn out?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to crestenfox [2013-03-29 00:31:08 +0000 UTC]
By size, do you mean the "chunkyness" of the wool or the size of the ball? A small to medium size ball should be fine for a cat's tail. As for chunkyness, a thinner wool will just need more strands per "fluff" than a chunkier wool would.

I'm not positive on the actual terms either, myself... not a knitter XD I know that a friend of mine had great results using a really chunky wool - she didn't even use a hair straightener on it, just brushed it out and went with the slightly wavy look. I thought it was suuuuper cute. For my tail I used a fairly small-medium weight.

WarmSummerSun In reply to Kill-me-sensless [2013-02-06 23:50:04 +0000 UTC]
It really helps to tie the end onto something before you get started. I like to use the back of a dining chair. So tie your ends onto that with a bit of extra tail hanging off (you can always chop it shorter later) and then pull it tight as you braid it. Hope that helps!
