Description
1. Try a really soft, chunky wool - you might not even have to straighten it and you need to use less wool!
2. Tie your fluffs into the braid instead of around it to stop them from sliding down the base!
3. Try separating the wool strands before brushing to prevent knots.
Total time: ~5 hours+ depending on length

I'd recommend aluminum armature wire in a thicker gauge. It's strong stuff but you can bend it really easily. If your yarn is thick enough it'll hide inside. Otherwise a smaller gauge would work. Stainless steel in the size that would work best would be too expensive I think and too hard to bend

What would you use to attach it to your body?

If you make a little loop, you can always hook it onto a belt. Or, what I've done before is make a strip of elastic that sits around my waste, and attach the tail to that.

So a belt made of elastic, sorta?

Yeah! You can just sew the ends together to make a loop, and there you go.

Thank you for the awesome tutorial! Will you please tell me what kind of brush that is, when you brush it to get it soft?
Thanks

Hey!!! Glad it was useful. It's a typical pet fur brush, they're also called slicker brushes I think, and you should be able to get one at any pet store. It's got wire bristles that fluff up the yarn really well. I'd love to see any finished products

Do you to brush it regularly to keep it looking nice? I'd made a tail like this but didn't have a hair-straightener. It kept getting all matted. Does a hair-straightener keep it from getting matted?

WarmSummerSun In reply to Rinaldwin [2012-12-21 03:26:46 +0000 UTC]
I've been having trouble with mine lately. The straightening doesn't last forever (it makes it straight, but the silkyness goes away, sort of?) When wearing it, any time it rubs against my clothing for a long period of time the fur there will get all wavy again. I wouldn't say it gets "matted" but it gets really wavy and looks odd. I definitely have to brush it a lot when wearing it.

Rinaldwin In reply to WarmSummerSun [2013-01-11 02:45:03 +0000 UTC]
When I say "matted" I mean; dog jumped in the water, got out, and shook him self off. That's what the tail starts to look like.

WarmSummerSun In reply to Rinaldwin [2013-01-11 07:35:59 +0000 UTC]
Ah yeah, definitely the same thing with me. I wonder if a different type of wool would behave differently. I noticed that my friend, who used a very chunky wool and didn't straighten it, didn't have this problem because the fur looked purposefully wavy.

Is it normal to get a ginormous amount of excess fluff that gets stuck in the brush? D:

ahh, okie. ^^ i have about half a plastic bag full of extra fluff from this tail. The yarn's slippery so I'm making a thicker tail than I intended to. What can you do with excess fluff? D:

ooh, cool idea i'm going to save mine, because i can't see throwing it out. it's perfectly good fluff, just... loose fluff. if i ever start making plushies and such like i want to, i'll do what you do
thanks!
