Thanks Julie.
(Sorry for taking so long to respond, I have been away.). The pictures come from many places and sources. This one came to me through my nephew. But I travel a lot, and I keep my eyes open. All of the pictures feel like gifts to me.
Thanks again.

First of all, I would like to apologize deeply for my absence. Between teaching myself Japanese and learning to drive (among other things) I just don't have much time lately.
You know, every one of your photographs bring joy into my heart. They're so simple, yet so complex... The complexity lies in their simplicity, in the ability to be interpreted many different ways. As you already know, I'm super big on interpretations. ^_^
A recurring theme throughout your gallery seems to be the beauty of the aged and imperfect, and this picture follows suit. It somehow just wouldn't be the same if it was of three brand new, flashy sportscars parked on a freshly-mowed, perfectly manicured lawn. It would lose the element of intimacy - for when things are visibly aged, they seem more real, more tangible. Well, at least to me they do. In a strange way, I can identify with it more that way. I suppose it's not like that for all people. If someone is used to living in opulence, having everything at their fingertips, then a picture like this might seem more uncomfortable than the aforementioned "shiny car" photograph... Who knows, right?

"First of all" apologies are not necessary. We are all busy. if we cannot understand and accept that of those around us, there is a problem.
how did the Japanese lessons go. languages canbe hard but enjoyable too. I hope you at least had some fun.
You have said some very nice things about my work it kind of makes me
I had not really recognized the theme you have pointed out. There is no plan in that. It is just happening right now. I am sure it will change. (Somehow i don't want to take close ups of flowers...yyeeeeshhhshshh) but may be later I will.
But I do think you have a valid point about old and new. As a society, we tend to "cast" things off, especially the old. Where I live there are 2 towns with very different attitudes. In the, old seems to be important, and there are stone houses and many old buildings, in the other, progress seems to be the driving fasctor and tearing down th eold and builing new seems to be the direction. The largest, and most sucessful town is the latter. Now I wonder what that says about us as people.
Actually Ilike the idea of shinny new cars, I just never seem to see any in the kinds of beautiful settings that i see thew gorgeous old ones...if fact come to think of it, I never see any new things in beautiful surroundings. OOPPSSS I think i may have just revealed something about myself.
if you decide to write something about these cars, you know i will post it with the image. But I am not saying this to pressure you. i was though hoping that the creative urge would strike you. I know you can't resist those urges, any more than i can. i also know that when they strike, it is not a burden but a joy to bring them to fruition. So i am not suggesting this to burden you, but rather to en-joy you. (play on words). If it does, great, if it does not that is OK too.
Blessings...

I would be thoroughly delighted to write a little something! Like I said, it's only a matter of finding the time to sit down and let my creative juices flow.
As for the Japanese, it's coming along great. I've been trying to learn as much as I can before i start school, sort of a "summer project" I've set for myself. Right now I have a limited knowledge of the language, which will soon be expanded, since my next vocab lists focuses primarily on verbs.
The funny thing about "themes" in our work is that they ususally are not intended. Well, sometimes they're deliberate, as in specific collections, but overall trends seem to follow our subconcious rather than the concious...
Unfortunately, where I'm living now, everything is brand new. Good for some, bad for others (namely, me. ^_^) Well, there is that one random barn thing I told you about... Still haven't gotten around to photographing it yet...

WayneBenedet In reply to alyson-rene [2007-07-04 01:54:44 +0000 UTC]
It is good to hear that the Japanese is coming along. Verbs are so important, I can understand why you were looking forward to them. I always found though, that they were never the ones that i wanted. Those only seemed to come later for me.
I think themes can be an interesting way to do art. If you remember the "Chords of Affection" series, it was really fun to do. It gave shape to my work and provided me with a workable theme that stretched my abilities. This current theme of "old" though was not really intentional. So maybe it happens both ways. Sometimes we get the "gift" of the theme in a conscious way and at other times we get the "gift' in a hidden way. Regardless, it is still a gift received. And from my perspective, it is imperative to respond and fulfill these kinds of gifts, so maybe in the first case, it was given as conscious, because I βwouldβ respond and maybe in the second case it was subconscious because that was the βonly wayβ I would respond. Not really sure, just kind of thinking out loud.
Well I hope you have a good week. For now take care.
