I love the complementary colours in this, the red highlights on the green truck, the violet snowshadows and the yellow highlights.

I am reminded of a childhood friend's ranch truck.

his father had 300- 400 acres on top of a short hill. although the hill was short, the road was 30 plus degrees and changed with each rain. it was one of the pleasures of visiting... a fairly remote place with even an outlaw's ruined cabin(bell starr) they would drive it in the warm months and then some time in late fall or early winter it would hibernate. where ever that happened to be it rested through the winter. lol, it didn't really matter. they left it and returned in the spring. in retrospect there was always a strange festive feel to the re-starting in the spring.

"we're gonna start ole blue, you comin'?"

you'd have to be a cretin to not...

I look at this one, and the one I posted form my Saskatchewan trip... and it kind of makes me wonder if all these old trucks perhaps don't have the same light issues? There is a distinct similarity with hundreds of miles between.

I think I might have enjoyed jumping on that old truck for the inaugural seasonal start up.

catch---22 In reply to WayneBenedet [2012-11-12 14:52:17 +0000 UTC]

lol, no recalls back then I suppose.

...and lol, the seasonal start was always fun except the time the tie-rod fell off. I almost wet myself.

I had a tie-rod fall off my truck about a year ago. It is amazing how well it drove until I finally stopped. It even navigated a number of corners fairly well. lol... Then I had to be towed for repair. The truck looked so sad with its wheels pointing in different directions.

lol.. is that an offer to pull me out????? I have not been stuck in years. I used to drive a Taurus, and never got stuck in that, but my son has it now so I drive an Explorer Sport Track that I got from my dad when he could not drive any longer. So far I have not been stuck in that either.... but there is always a first time.... so stay by the phone with your tow rope OK???? lol..

C'mon, Wayne; you know you want to drag it home with you!
In fact, given all the old truck photos you've taken it's practically mandatory that you get yourself one and fix it up to go driving 'round taking pictures of the others. Rolling advertising!

(This would be tax deductible, you know.)

WayneBenedet In reply to Kaleidopsyche [2012-11-10 14:52:46 +0000 UTC]

lol... what a take... a tax deduction... I had never thought of that angle.

Kaleidopsyche In reply to WayneBenedet [2012-11-10 18:16:39 +0000 UTC]

Sure! Get an oldie, outfit it with modern drivetrain à la rat rod (4WD so you can go anywhere), paint your name on the side, sunroof with tripod mount for those pop-up pictures, lots of compartments to store gear and travel accessories (think: mini-camper), park it outside shows as advertising ...

Think of the fun you could have!

WayneBenedet In reply to Kaleidopsyche [2012-11-10 18:24:05 +0000 UTC]

you are just trying to tempt me now.... I love it. Can you imagine how great that would be for advertising?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaleidopsyche In reply to WayneBenedet [2012-11-10 20:03:29 +0000 UTC]

I think it should be a panel truck; room in the back to lie down in case you're too far from a motel, space for a bit of camping gear as well.

Now, there are some difficulties with getting CRA to accept something as just a work vehicle, but as you are an established photographer with shows & sales of old truck images they'd have a hard time arguing against it.

I also think you're due some kind of grant money because of the highly Canadian nature of much of your work. Maybe you should get a Fargo or Mercury panel truck to emphasize that theme. You could plan longer outings to more distant locales to shoot the vanishing rural Canadiana. Quite the historical documentation value here.

We need to get Ryan in on this; he probably knows just the shell to work with. I think his cat is sleeping on him though, as he hasn't been heard from in a while.

WayneBenedet In reply to Kaleidopsyche [2012-11-11 03:42:22 +0000 UTC]

lol... a panel truck could be interesting. This year I spent time in saskatchewan taking a few pictures. I pulled a small trailer that worked well. One of the pictures won an Honorable mention in an international show. I have often wondered if the Canadian Art Council would have funding or even non-monetary support (eg shows in toronto, edmonton and vancover), but I have not done much about it. My sense is that without a great deal of support from the public, requests just get lost in the jumble and magnitude of requests and I am not very good at garnering support for those kinds of things. I would rather put my time into what I do best... taking pictures. I also think that putting in a request could take a great deal of time, time I would rather spend doing what I do... especially if it just gets turned down.

The truck is a great idea for advertising. Not sure I could really afford it, but it won't hurt to discuss it with my accountant the next time we meet.

I have not heard from Ryan in a while either. I hope he is OK.

I talked to Cindy a few weeks back about doing another book. She is up for it, but I have not found the inspiration yet.

We've had some photographers as clients. Most of them, even the really good ones, had to go get jobs instead. Art doesn't pay. Crime does, of course; that's why so many people go in to politics.

it is a tough grind. I have found that diversification works, teaching at the college, shows, workshops, traveling and speaking about my work. Somehow it all seems to work out.
