Description Perhaps this makes an understandable statement.  Perhaps not.  None the less it is a kind of work that I have long enjoyed.

any idea of the vintage of the compass/sundial instrument? that is a piece of history right there [even if it is a reproduction]
I'm thrilled that I found this gem of a picture and the ideas that it represents.
It's odd, I just severed ties with one church organization, but I feel the I have better direction now that I did within those confines; freer to serve my purpose in life.
Thanks for a beautiful image with many layered messages.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your comment.

The sundial compass is a reproduction.  I cannot date it precisely, but it is similar to one made in 1919, designed by F Barker & Son.  The latitudes scale reaches from zero to 90° so that this instrument can be used from the equator to the poles.

The books are from my wife's family and date to the late 1800's to early 1900's.  They are in the old German script so are somewhat of a challenge to read.

Yes, our eyes are not trained / accustomed to reading those letters any more.

Lovely composition indeed! (A tad surprised to find german books in this still-life, though. )

thanks.  Don't know why you would be surprised though, there are many German people in this area.  My wife's first language was German.

Happy New Year to you as well (I do not speak German well myself, but I have studied enough and I am around it enough to understand many things).

Nice still life!
And well chosen title, at least for someone recognising the german book's titles (though I had to look up "Wandelnde Seele" in google).

lol...personally I like this kind of work to have hidden parts. If everything is right out front, it seems to take away from the mystery.

Lol.... Reading would be an overstatement.  I have studied the language but my abilities are very poor.  My wife however speaks and reads.  These are books from her father.

I am glad I don´t have to learn it - it´s very complicated and even many German people don´t know it right

Love the depth of field in this one. Don't know if you adjusted the composition to put everything on the same plane of focus or not, but it turned out perfectly!

WayneBenedet In reply to CarlMillerPhotos [2016-12-16 16:19:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank carl,

The composition required some very careful measurements from the CMOS to the scene.  The one flaw that i see in the image is that the DOF does not fully contain the right hand book on the bottom.  In order to do that I should have moved in back a very small amount.  Measuring and setting the focus at the centre of the scene was a challenge.  I did not want a DoF that extended through the scene, but I wanted to contain the front level of the objects with the minimum aperture possible.  I experimented with f4, 5.6 and 8, and found that 5.6 gave me what I envisioned in my head.  The carnation in the back was added simply for a splash of colour. In some ways, it made the shot far more interesting.  It was important to keep it well out of focus, so that it would not become the centre of attraction.  It still draws the eye because of the colour, but the lack of focus quickly allows the viewer to shift back the the books and compass.
