Description We have all heard the saying that “children stand on their parents shoulders”. This statement is an understanding that parents build a foundation that their children use to move forward in their lives. It is understood that children build forward from the point that their parents construct. It is a matter of sacrifice for our children, that we give up certain things as parents in order to give our children a better start that we had ourselves. In our world, children have historical done better than their parents, at least in our modern age.

This structure is part of an old brick factory. Some 50 years ago, it produced bricks and created a physical and a metaphorical foundation for many parents to build a base upon which their children could construct their lives. The work was hard and back breaking, and not financially rewarding. Those families have moved on from this point, and given our current affluence, is is reasonable to assume, the move was to better times. Yet it reminds me that historically parents have sacrificed for their children and taken on many burdens so their children would have better lives.

In our world of financial uncertainty, parents continue this unending quest. I have called this image “Foundations” because of what was created in this structure (bricks), what it represents (a way to create a future) and finally what can remind us about our parents, our families and our lineage.

Looks to be an old and extremely large kiln. Excellent photo, such an interesting structure. I appreciate the meanings that have attached to this and shared with us.

There's something significant about the fact that bricks were made in this brick structure, and that the bricks themselves are intact while the mortar is failing.

WayneBenedet In reply to Photoninja [2008-12-26 01:36:42 +0000 UTC]

It probably speaks to the quality of the bricks.

Oh God I'm old!

It's a really wonderful shot; the subtlety of tone emphasises the slow decay.
A visual parallel to the ancient burial mounds, perhaps?

very thoughtful words Wayne.
The building is a yertz too which is cool and has philosophical implications.
Nice image and cool words!
ps
along the hudson river where i live are millions of discarded bricks from the brick factories that once existed there. Very interesting history. Are the fields around this building full of bricks?

Hi Staats

This factory is located in a valley, I am not even sure where the material for making the bricks came from, perhaps clay from along the river. The area is actually quite small, one would have expected a larger are for such an undertaking.

Nice picture and very interesting viewpoint as well. Most parents try to set up a good foundation for their kids (at least I hope so)

WayneBenedet In reply to falcon01 [2008-12-18 13:22:11 +0000 UTC]

well, at least that is what we are taught, I suppose a few parents do not do this, but as a societal norm, it is probably true.

Nice find! And good shot. It's ironic that not only are the brickmakers gone, but the bricks are crumbling as well, but as you say, hopefully everyone moved onward and upward. You can see that the kiln wall was patched where the pattern goes from alternating to more stacked. The mortar is holding up better there. You may know this, but for those that don't, the holes around the outside of the oven were both for access to feed the fire, and also vents to adjust the airflow and thus the heat all the way around, insuring that the bricks fired evenly. I learned that on The History Channel!
