Description This shot represents over 100 years of technology. For its day, the watch made by Waltham in the late 1800,s was highly accurate. Today it still runs with an accuracy that rivals some digital watches.

The background is a computer card, which also requires timing to function. However, while the watch meaures time in seconds, the card measures it in nano-SECONDS.

Technology has brought us many things. There have been many changes and improvements, but sometimes, old technology is as functional and far more beautiful than the new.

the image is being used by a new card game called Hull Breech. I think the release is this spring, but I am not really sure.

Sweet. Great contrast between the hard shapes and lines of the circuit board and the flowing curves of the mechanical pocket watch. I agree with you. While our modern technology may be more efficient, sometimes you just can't beat old fashioned elegance. I always wanted a mechanical pocket watch...

thanks for your comment,

pocket watches are fairly easy to come by at flea markets and the like, and they can be had fairly cheaply too.

I somewhat disagree with your statement.

First, the watch is really made to keep time while a video card has timer but it's function wasn't to keep time. And actually the thing in any circuit board that really does the timing is called a "Crystal" and from what I understand it basically generate a pulse to make everything tic. So you an say this Crystal is the "Heart" of the circuit board.

Second, technology is more to "improve". This term is very open since there are many ways to improve. It can be made easy to mass produce the product or to improve it's function.

Anyway, I completely understand your fascination for classic items. It is very beautiful in it's own and I like it too.

Not to plug my own work (OK, maybe a little ) but I had written up a blurb on time in an old journal: [link] The watch obviously reminded me of that particular entry but at the time I hadn't considered how reliant computers are on time. Perhaps this photo is more accurate in so far as Technology makes us Human.

That watch is absolutely amazing. The video card looks quite boring next to it. To think that watch was created over 100 years ago... wow. When I see artistic and mechanical quality such as this, it makes me think the majority of people on dA, myself included, are a bunch of wannabes. The creator of this watch invested a serious amount of his life into the design and construction of this time piece. Me, I get away with folding some paper or snapping a quick photo and calling it art.

Anyhow, don't mean to ramble. The photo itself, along with everything else in your gallery, is super crisp and vibrant. Maybe I'm just a techno-geek but I like this subject matter as well.

thanks a lot for your thoughts Eric,

As for plugging your own work....we all need to, no one else will do it for us.

I read your journal entry. It sparked many thoughts that I won't go into. I tend to be attracted to old technology. many years ago i found a watch built in the city there I lived (Winnipeg) and it was made for a company in southern Ontario in a town called Clinton. I spent a lot of time researching this watch, its maker and even the company that it was made for. Eventually I even got to talk to the niece of the company owner. I was never able to find any living relatives of the watch maker though.

You know, you might just be right about th eneed for humans to measure time. But it is not just time....we seem to NEED to measure everything, and if and when it doe not MEASURE UP....we discard it, everything from objects to people. maybe in that we are unique, but certainly not constructive.

Thanks again for your thoughts.
