I live in a small town in Western kansas, and went to a tiny public high school that was, by some chance, blessed to have one of the best art progras in the state. I was very fortunate. And I thank you for all the kind comments you've left me!

And you talk about hair being a pain in the tushy (I learned a new word btw ) - I'm quite amazed at how yours turned out!! Seriously, it could use a bit more contrast at the top and a few more details in the top right corner, but all the wild hair in the lower part just kicks tushy

You did a really nice job keeping the lights and the darks in the hair consistent, especially with the hair pins...

This piece has been featured in my journal.
Also, ask your friend where she got those hair sticks! They are beautiful.

My goodness that is beautiful! Such patience that must have taken you!
May I ask in which parts the touch of prisma is? I can normally spot it, but you've blended this very well into the graphite
Very well done!

thank you!
it's kinda hard to see, but there's some green on the large hair pinks, and some red on the smaller, lower one. The large pin also has sme copper, but it's almost impossible to see

This is gorgeous. And congrats on the Merit Award. I enter that competition, I understand the challenge in it. I love the form, and the hair is gorgeous. Im trying to learn to draw hair (dedicating this year to improving humans). Another nice touch if how there is few colours. The nice green in her clip, and a very slight red in the piece hanging from her hair. Gorgeous. A must
for me.
Any tips for realistic hair? I cant seem to figure out how to get that strand look.

you need to start with a very sharp, hard pencil. like a 2h or below. divide the hair into sections, if you will, and draw one section at a time. for example, you see how the hair in my picture forms waves and loops, swilring a few inches wide in one direction before being knotted up in a another section? try dividing yoiur hair up like that. using a sharp tip, draw long, smooth lines from one part of the section to the other; one long line, without lifting the pencil. do this in the entire section, following the "grain" of the hair. this is your base. Next, take the darkest pencil you will be using, and start at the point where the hair will be most in shadow; like beneath a fold. still with a sharp point, repeat the previous process, but make it a shorter stroke, lightening the pressure as you go. make sure you do not use this dark pencil over the area you want shine to be. The light pencil gives you the strand effect, and the dark pencil created your shadows and shine. You may need to use an in between pencil too, depending on how dark the hair is. Also, to get more strands, take a kneaded eraser and make a "blade" edge with it, "slicing" across an area you want a thin lock to be, then underline it with a medium pencil. A good way to practice this technicue is with a braid, because it's sections are very clear, smooth and defined.
I should really make a tutorial!
hope that hjelped, and than you so much!
