It's awesome to see how smoothly water flows in contrast to how solidly ice remains in its place, both right next to each other over the same rocks...So odd but so cool anyway

I really love this shot for all reasons... but mostly it just speaks way beyond words... what a pleasure to view this beauty!!! My wife and I have done a couple of shoots that included Lake Michigan... dreaming of seeing some formations along the line of the ones you have been showing. Last time my wife got to the shore first and was out on what appeared to be ice covered solid ground... I stepped out one step and my foot went through and about 3 minutes later repeated with the other foot. There looked like there might be some neat stuff on the far side of an ice wall about 40 feet further out but we decided the area wasn't safe. I was wondering if this is just the water undercutting the ice and lying between it and the sand. Bet you see a lot of strange things out there. Anyway... as I "get my feet wet" I continually develop a deepening respect for what you and many others do out there!!! You help make it fun... thanks!!!

thanks my friend ... btw I tried to say thanks on your page yesterday and my browser had a meltdown ... thats 3 times now ... always on your page. Must be some script in something embedded in your journal ... so I'll just say thanks here for all the support you've shown for my work ...very appreciated!

Hmmm, it could be. I have been having trouble responding to comments that people send me. I think I have some sort of virus on my pc though. it seems to affect me & now people that try to communicate with me. if you have any problems like this in the future, could you please let me know? I hope this isn't something that is contagious. Since your response, i have been considering whether i should report this to DA or not. Would they even do anything though? I think someone might be messing with me just to irritate me or something.

I was under the impression you had some heavy script in your journal ... if you take out any off-site links from your journal I'd try your page again...

WHOAH!! There's a group of ice formations in there that look like a bunch of people gathering around something. I don't know if you can see it, but it's COOL! Mid-upper right, the "blobby" formations.

A rather jarring difference between the hard and edgy and motionless ice and the softly blurred flowing water. Quite an unusual view, I love it!

As to someone else's request for camera settings, I do agree that they have nothing whatever to do with one's appreciation of the artistry. Yet also I have learned so much by looking at a photo and reading how someone has set their camera. Technical expertise can feed artistic expression and it's a joy to learn from a master. Though also, PS and other manipulations can render camera settings meaningless or even deceiving. Just a thought...

Great work again!

wb-skinner In reply to Flaming-Horseteeth [2008-02-21 21:53:10 +0000 UTC]

thanks .. I'm glad you like it

but without knowledge of the lighting conditions or water speed, there really isn't a whole lot to learn IMO ...

I suppose I could describe that info and the camera, filters, lenses, and settings ... but I never like discussing cameras and technical info ..

I'd rather discuss the mountain creek and the ice formations and the nature of the photo itself like composition and perspective... camera talk and cameras in general bore me to death. Thats why I've never joined any camera clubs .. too many people love the equipment more than the actual scene they are taking a picture of.

I find that holds true more in the age of digital than ever before .. because lets face it .. people who spend time on the internet and in front of computers tend to be really fascinated with tech-talk.

The best way to learn is go out and shoot the same scene with ten different settings ... digital lets us do that

Excellent points! Too true about gear fascination. As a semi-pro keyboard musician I have encountered precisely the same over-attention to the technology at the expense of plain old hard work. As if the gear would improve the performance. HAH! Perhaps your most salient point and best advice is to simply going out and shooting a subject with 10 different settings. Amen!

wb-skinner In reply to richy1982 [2008-02-21 22:37:53 +0000 UTC]

hey one more thing my friend ... I really glad you enjoyed the photo ... sorry if I sounded a bit harsh but I've discussed the 'settings' thing a lot of times ... and plus I just woke up when I wrote that!

hope you understand...

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

wb-skinner In reply to richy1982 [2008-02-21 21:24:31 +0000 UTC]

settings are completely irrelevant because they would be different in any given lighting situation... also completely different if the water was travelling at a different speed through the frame.

so why do we require this info?

sorry but I really have no use for technical info etc. because the truth is I love the nature and not my camera.
