Description
To respond to warnings of impending invasion Several Earth governments began to develop a new generation of fighters to respond to the threat. Built in secret using advanced terrestrial power and engine systems the fighters were largely third and fourth generation technology, since the catastrophic loss of life, and depopulation of entire regions had left such craft as The F/A-70 and Mig 45 beyond the means of even the most stable industrial base.Such aircraft as The Mig/Northrop F-Zed "Dragon/Drakon/Ao Guang" were rushed into operation as quickly as possible from long dormant cold war factories deep in the hinterlands of Siberia, The Gobi desert, and the legendary "Skunkworks" of area 51. This international effort along with other fighters and strike craft built by individual governments came as a shock to the Invading Najuhim forces when they easily outperformed the Najuhlim fighters that were used for screening and air support.
when deployed to cover older conventional bombers and attack aircraft the ability to turn on a dime, and fly with their nose nearly 90 degrees off axis without loss of speed or control made the Dragon a fearsome adversary for the Najuhhlim who were restricted to subsonic flight by the aerodynamics of their fighters. Streaking in at high supersonic speeds, unleashing missiles tuned to seek out the electronic emissions of the Najuhlim antigrav lifters, then accelerating out of the range of Najuhlim plasma weapons the Dragons scored dozens of kills for every aircraft lost.
The Dragons also benefited from the vastly superior terrestrial Electronic Warfare systems. Often the terrestrial defenders were able to blind entire Najuhlim squadrons to their approach until enemy aircraft began to explode from long range missile strikes. This advantage was key in the successful destruction of several enemy cruisers that attempted to force a breach in the Atlantic barrier and the Siberian Frontier. Dragons fitted with 2000lb laser guided stand off attack munitions closed to within kilometers of the cruisers before releasing their ordnance. the attacks were costly once the aircraft came within line of sight, however, the Najuhlim were ill prepared to replace heavy warships lost to single man fighters.
Unfortunately the sheer numerical superiority and difficulty in producing the advanced off world designed system of the Dragon,as well as the Quetzal, Wyrvern and Wraith zed-type fighters resulted in a battle of attrition the Terrestrial forces could not sustain. By the final battles for Earth only two squadrons of dragons were left, and these were made up of Russian, American, and Chinese aircraft operating from a deeply buried base in the Canadian arctic. These two squadrons were unable to operate effectively due to overwhelming enemy air superiority and a crippling lack of ordnance that was effective against enemy craft.
The Fifteen Aircraft that survived the war were dispersed back to their native countries and retired from service as more advanced purpose built fighters were manufactured after the recovery efforts made it possible for Earth to produce it's own weapons systems. These aircraft remain airworthy and routinely perform at the annual Victory day celebration at The Terran Unified Defense Force headquarters at Calgary each June.
