Description
I am a US ARMY INFANTRYMAN, for the time being, this is the weapon i carry. the M249 SAW (squad automatic weapon) is a "fully automatic, belt or magazine fed machine gun that fires from the open bolt position." and can fire up to 850 rounds per minute if i had to, but never will!!!Related content

its really ot heavy once ya carry it for a bit, i am a larger guy, and in full kit with my M249 and a full combat load plus a little extra, i could still outrun alot of other people. firing from the prone position, just like firing any other machine gun, for as big as it is, the kick on bipods aint bad, but from a kneeling or standing position, it takes some gettin used to! aint na say the first time didnt surprise me, but after a couple of bursts and a solid stance, its just like firing a heavy M4 really really fast! and now, its no big deal at all!

yeah, i pretty much agree with you on what your saying, BUT, being as how i work in an arms room, we just got in 3 new SAWs, and theres been an ever so slight modification that im curious to see in action. they put a couple holes in the feed tray, and mounted a small piece undernieth(yeah, i cant spell for shit!) BUT, what im gettin at, they actually put two little feeder paws right on the feed tray. if im right, this shoudl eliminate almost 50% of jams, simply by preventing the twist of the belt, and prolly help keep the belt from breaking on accident, either way, im curious to see if it works out as well as i hope

At least one decent gun in the US Ground troops...
I pity those who have to fight for thier lives with an unreliable M4 carbine.

the M4 has its issues, but it is still a good reliable weapon, so long as its properly maintained.

The weapon itself is more or less reliable, but the magazine brings 50% of the stoppages too.
Plus, the M4 is incapable of fireing in certain angles, its 5,56mm round isn`t getting the full force in the short barrel, the M4 canΒ΄t bear water and finally, its frame can`t support more than 3 kilos or so of weight...
Also long scope mounts can`t be used because of the split Picatinny rail, and the front sight always gets in the way.
So, the M4 has plenty of issues, and is best at defending the country, not defending the world.
Sand, water and mud is death for it.

again, not so long as its propperly maintained. sand, water, and mud can be removed, if ya cant take care of a weapon then ya shouldnt be carrying one. as far as the magazine issues, they sell steel mags. with the steel mag, the catch/release does wear down NEARLY as fast, and just as with any other magazine, you should always take it apart to give your spring a break, hell, i did that once a week in iraq anyway, everyday, one of my mags would sit in pieces, and just rotate through them every day. no arguments with the barrel, you dont have the distance that you would with an M16, but one of the major reasons for going with the M4 was the increase in raids and clearing buildings, going into a doorway is significantly easier with a shorter barrel, the same concept was adapted to service the M249s in the same manner. and since the best range for an M4 is 400 meters or less, why do you need a long scope, seriously! Use an M110! I stand by my weapons!

The point is, simply, that the M4 is outdated, outperformed and outgunned by the enemy.
Plus, by water i mean SEAL type operations, such as diveing out the water with the rifle drawn, then fireing. It makes the rifle explode.
Second, there ARE better parts, so why do they still use the standard parts, instead of simply reviseing the M4 once more? Longer picatinny rail, better mag, better barrels, the 6,8mm SPC and a god damn gas piston system.
If they don`t want to buy the XM8 then they should at least adapt to the newer standards.

its the fuckin army, they go with the cheapest they can, at least for the general army, yeah, seal team, special forces, they get better shit, they get more expensive toys. hell, alot of times they will get them for free, just to field test them. btu the fact of the matter is, general army soldiers arent going to be diving, at all, let alone with their weapons drawn and ready for combat. i do agree that the army should support some of the modifications that are out there, but again, their cheap. and i whole heartedly agree with using a gas piston system, much cleaner and more efficient. so, at least for quite some time, i doubt they will buy the XM8 OR adapt the newer mods for the M4. but for the record, being that this conversation started over a M249, lol, thats not the greatest weapon in the world either! not saying its bad, but all the arguments that you've made against the M4, most of them go hand in hand with the SAW as well, if not made worse.

Well the SAW is outdated as well, you can bet on that. Its a handy weapon, but not the best.
Anyways, in terms of machine guns, all they research as for now is the Light Heavy Machinegun System... which is also long overdue if you think about that carrying around 50-70 Kilos of weaponary in warfare isnΒ΄t the wisest choice...
As for assault rifles however i doubt thereΒ΄s going to be a change in the next few years, not after the failure of the XM29, the XM8 and, last but not least, the SCAR as well. (They said the rifle won... but what now?)

Your right, all the SAWs in my platoon have retractable butstocks similar to that of an M4, there are some in my company that are very strange, but i have no picture of them. The reason for the shortened barrel is for Close Quarters Combat. I do carry two spare long barrels. In Iraq, that has actually become pretty standard for Infantrymen. Though I have seen some with eotech lasers rather than the M145 scope, but thats pretty much shooter's preference. Thank you.

whats that mean, "stock photo?"

IsolatedRogue In reply to weber5230 [2007-10-21 23:15:38 +0000 UTC]
It means that other people can use the image to put into their manipulations but they have to give you credit. You make rules to fit your stock images cause you still hold rights to them, u're just letting others use it.

yeah, i'd imagine it would take much less than a minute to get whoever it is you're aiming for with that baby. now, i'm not very sure how you work or anything, but i'd imagine that takes a bit of time to set up, so if you're walking and see an enemy, do you have any other way to protect yourself like a pistol or something?

well, ya see in order to fire that many rounds, not only do you have to have them all on one belt, but thats holdin the trigger for the full minute. when im walkin around i have a 200 round drum already loaded in my weapon, soo all i have to do is take off the safety and shoot.
