Description
A heads up: lots of info to be typed here! You have NO idea how long I've been stewing on the full development of this girl
Been a while since anyone's seen this little lady, huh? To be fair, she's almost as old as the anime/manga series she is supposed to be apart of, considering that she's been around since 2008.
I have been occasionally working on her since I made her, the last time of my drawing her is all the way back in 2012-2013. I didn't get back full swing into the saddle until the announcement and release of Dark Side of Dimensions back in 2015 and 2016 (aka the awesome movie that makes me feel HELLA old because holy fuck, 20 years since this series about card games came out?) Respectively. Since then, I've been working on mechanics and info on Gix for a while, and to be honest, I feel like it would be a shame if I didn't provide an updated ref/sheet with most of that info (not counting any particular future stories that will feature her) here.
Because really, no matter how you may view this series and all of its ridiculousness, this series is how I met my first best friend on this site and led to me meeting many others. This series (especially the first generation) has my eternal respect because of that.
Anyways, let's get into it, shall we?
-----(*)----
"I'm here to protect and observe you at best. At worst, I am the back up plan if the prophecy fails."
Name usually referred to as: Gixyu
Nickname: Gix
Actual Name: S_h_r (ERROR: INFORMATION CORRUPTED)
Gender: Female
Age(*): 15-16 years (during DM Canon timeline), 17/18 years (DSOD event timeline, one of the months that passed prior to it was her birthday month)
Birthday: 09/16 (September 16)
Class: Magic Rogue/Summon Master/Puzzle Master (she's in a world where summoning monsters and games is a major theme, go figure)
Elemental Type: Darkness/Light(**)
Personality: initially, very reserved and composed, as well as unfeeling and numb (since in the initial early times, she hasn't developed her emotions/sympathy). As she grows out of that phase, her actual personality is more apparent; reserved, mature and rational, but really isn't "above it all" in being so. Can be laid back at times, and very sarcastic/snarky when unamused or bored. Has an interesting sense of curiosity and a surprising sense of humor. Confident and brave, but isn't without her own insecurities and self doubts (she just knows how to hide those better during times where they shouldn't be apparent). VERY loyal to those she loves and cares about, even if she has to call them out on their bullshit.
Fantasy Voice Casting?: Tara Strong (English VA), Kaori Ishihara (Japanese VA -- During DM Canon only), Lynn (Japanese VA -- During DSOD events only).
Animal Lemotifs/Symbols: Jackal/Pharaoh Hound, Phoenix(**)
Music Lemotifs/Character Songs: "Mists of Egypt" (by Derek and Brandon Fiechter), "Eyes Like Yours"/"Ojos Asi" (by Shakira), "Odds and Ends" (by Hatsune Miku)
Favorite Food: Short Ribs or Tangerines/Clementines (is not picky, but these are the most common she'll say as her first favorite)
Least Favorite Food: Tofu or Extra Spicy Curry (hates the texture and fuck no that's too hot)
Backstory(Lore/Origin): 3,000 (or 5,000 depending on who or what you consult or ask) years ago was no fun times for mortals AND Gods alike. In the realms, there was a very devastating war and struggle of power known as The Great Upset that threw everything into chaos, no Pantheon was safe, but the one that seemed to be caught between a sharp rock and a very hard place was that of the Egyptian Gods of Egypt. While their faithful Mortal subjects were mostly and deliberately unaware, it was wartime for the gods, and they struggled between keeping the peace of the two realms that intersected (the realm of mortals and the realm of monsters), and keeping the effects and legions of war of the Great Upset from causing any damage to their people who gave them their faith. Then, a tome stolen from Thoth's library falls into the mortal realm, into the hands of a High Priest of a Kingdom soon to be besieged by Barbarians.
The birth of the Millennium Items led to the Shadow Games, and what both unleashed led to the start of the Pantheon's downfall in the ever failing struggle to keep their world safe, as the gods' normally everlasting power began to fade and be drained. It was to the point that when Zorc Necrophades reared his ugly head(s), none of the gods were strong enough to destroy him, or summon the forces to do so.
The straw that broke the camel's back was the sacrifice The Pharaoh that was recently put into power during this chaos made, and the ensuing catastrophes prior, in order to seal all of it away. The gods began to retract their presence, having lost so much power and seeing the move as the End of the Era of Magic for Egypt.
But not all gods felt like their work was done--The Divine Undertaker and God of the Dead, Anubis, out of worry about the massive loss of life and ensuing chaos that occurred out of all this happening once again when the sealing breaks, and not wanting to leave it all up to one prophecy and plan alone, decided to make a "Back up Plan".
And that Back up Plan, led to the creation of a construct, Gixyu.
Backstory (Personal -- DM Canon/Unlocked!verse canon): being created by a god that is more of the avatar of Death than a creator deity, Gix was not exactly made perfect. For one, she was born with half of her heart formed (meaning she hadn't really developed emotions right from the start and couldn't feel in terms of emotional output/input when she was first "born"), and for two, being raised in a small inbetween dimension between the realm of the living and the afterlife, had left her with an impaired socialization skill outside of being formal to other gods that helped teach her the basics of Magic, Combat and Strategic thinking. If anyone were to ask, Gixyu would say that her earliest memories are of her training and lessons. When a growing concern about a Seeker of Darkness, the disappearing of worlds by the Heartless and whispers about the Emperor of The Dark possibly returning reached the home and ears of the now 'retired' Anubis, he found that his creation--or as he refers to her as, his daughter--wouldn't be safe if she was kept in one place that would eventually be found, by either this Seeker or any of Zorc's minions that could possibly be still around. So, he had sent her out into the mortal realm, telling her to seek the one that prophecy would choose to be the vessel and stay close.
Due to circumstances at the time, her journey there was a little complicated, leaving her a homeless drifter who kept to herself for the most part, until she reached Domino City. Her meeting Yugi and his friends as well as Three Travelers at the time, and vice versa, led to not only change for her, but a whole lot of change for them.
Abilities:
Magic: to say Gixyu is skilled at Magic and Sorcery is like saying the sky is blue--she's most proficient at utilizing buff spells and magic that provide offense and defense. She is also skilled in the art of Summoning Magic, but that is more further detailed below. She's also very understanding of different kinds and history of spells and magic, and knows more curses and enchantments than most know about in their lifetime. The more experience she has in the Mortal Realm, the Stronger she gets.
Summoning Magic: in a world that essentially depicts the act of fighting with summoned monsters through a card game, is it any surprise she has this skill? Gixyu knows enough about Summoning Magic that she can summon monsters without having to enact a Shadow Game (though she still has the ability to enact the latter). She takes her Deck(s) everywhere, but not just for Duels--the Duel Monster Cards she has act as her Summoning Tarots for the monsters she can bring forth, the main point of focus that establishes the connection to the Mortal realm and the Realm of Monsters that the summoned monster lives in. She can also use certain Trap and Spell cards like how she uses her own magic to make traps and spells.
Sixth Sense: being Anubis' Daughter, she can see, sense and communicate with the dead, meaning she can easily talk to Yami even when he isn't taking over Yugi's body. She also has an attuned sense to pick up on corrupted or strong magic or the presence of an Millennium Item nearby. Her sense of this is like the nose of a Bloodhound, thus she can hard to get rid of once she's locked onto someone.
Physical Dexterity/Agility: Possibly the best advantage she has over Yugi is that she, despite looking lean and lanky, is physically adept. Gixyu is not Speedster quick, but she is very fast and nimble, even without boosting her speed/agility with magic. The only thing quicker than her legs is her hands--Gix is a very fast draw, and she can snatch things out of your hands faster than you can count to one. This leads into the other physical skill....
Accuracy/Precision: Gix's normal choice of weaponry are things she can shoot and fire, if she has no room to use her magic but has room for ranged attacks. And she's a mean shot, usually with a bow and arrow.
Adaptibility: a skill she's had since she was born, Gixyu is a fast learner and is quick to adapt as soon as she gets a handle on the basics. There will be situations that it doesn't kick in for some reason or another, but that's more detailed in the weaknesses section.
Physical Combat: If she has to, she knows how to fight and defend herself, with or without a weapon. She more prefers to outmaneuver and outwit someone rather than punch someone's lights out, but she is capable of the skills to do so if it comes down to it. However, she does not have stout strength.
Intellect/Puzzle Master/Strategic Thinker: combined with her adaptibility, Gix is pretty hard to beat in most games and challenges outside of Duel Monsters. It's what earns her the title of Queen of Games by the public eventually (at least one of the reasons that lead to that title). She usually falls back on this to deal with most enemies.
Shapeshifting: Gixyu has the ability to shapeshift into animals, most commonly a Jackal, Cat, Blackbird, Egyptian Jerboa or Beetle. She can't shapeshift into something larger than a five story building nor smaller than a dime, and she can't completely mimic (or Skinwalk as) another human being. She uses this to be stealthy and to get out of situations she can't get through normally. It does come with the drawback that her clothes are left behind, however, but she tries different methods to circumvent the issue of bring naked.
Weaknesses:
Emotional Disconnect/Distance: as noted before, Gixyu wasn't born with the ability to emote/feel properly, it was something that had to be learned amongst the company of humans she met and got to know. Emotions are hard for her to get a handle on in the early days, and it was hard for an emotional response to be made. As a result, she may come off as Unfeeling and cold unintentionally.
Power incontinence: Just because she's afluent in magic, doesn't mean she doesn't have problems in tempering it, especially given her emotional developments and how they effect her powers. While she can keep herself balanced, she can lose control of herself if there's an overload of an emotional input. The other reasons for this may also be that she is a Juvenile, and isn't at her full potential (as far as incidents during DM Canon goes) yet, and thus isn't completely aware of the extent of them nor completely in control of them. She tends to lose control when she loses a grip on her rational line of thinking or, as mention, has too much of an emotional or stress overload.
Stronger Enemies: She can be overpowered if there's enough strength in someone to overpower her. If she can't draw her magic up in time, she can be almost effortlessly picked up and captured. (The challenge is to make sure she stays captured, however)
Sensory Deprivation: if robbed of any and all of her senses for any period of time, she can't use any of her powers. It has to be a very effective means of deprivation to keep her helpless.
Runed Restraints/Enchanted Restraints: as with any Magical creature or spellcaster, she can also be kept from using magic if fitted with restraints meant to seal her power.
Power Limiter: As long as Yami is around and until she taps into her true potential, she can't get any stronger. (Granted, once the Ceremonial Duel happens and he's out of the picture and she fully Recovers from that, all bets are off on this weakness) it was put into her as apart of her role as the Back up Plan in the event that Yugi fails or something happens to the Puzzle.
Temper: while not short fused, when she gets angry enough she can lose all sense of rational thought. Once she gets it in her head that someone must be punished, it's nigh impossible to stop her, which could lead into her getting into serious trouble without realizing it at the time.
Social Awkwardness: eventually gets over this the more humanized she becomes/the more she socially and emotionally develops. In the early times, cannot act normally out of formal situations.
Moveset/Special Attacks:
Spirit Flames/Will o' Wisps: can conjure blue flames that can pursue a target or be placed as markers on the road. Also serves as the basis of any Fire-tier Spells. Max number is 8 wisps (during DM Canon)/13 wisps (during DSOD events)
Summon Monster: pretty Standard, exactly what it says on the tin: takes a Monster card out of the deck on hand and uses the card as a focus to summon said monster as an ally in combat. The Stronger the monster, the more energy (or MP) it takes.
Summon Trap: like Summon Monster, though with a Trap Card of choice. Can be focused to actually manifest the trap as an obstacle, or be a debuff on the enemy/buff for an ally.
Summon Spell: like Summon Monster, but with a Spell Card of choice. When utilized, the effects of the Card translate into proper buffs or added effects for Allies, with only certain ones manifesting as they are in a Duel depending on their effect (e.g.: Swords of Revealing Light can manifest as they are, acting as a Barrier Shield for a set amount of time)
Aeroga: Similar to KH1 Aero Spells. Summons a gust of wind that encircles a targeted Ally (or herself), acts as a reflective shield for AoE attacks and prevents debuffs from the enemy.
Monster Connection/Channel Monster: Alternative to Summon Monster if trying to conserve energy. Taps into the power of the monster chosen and allows her to use one attack/special move based on that monster (e.g.: Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon = Neutron Blast Cannon aka Big Beam O' Fuck You ). Costs less than summoning the monster fully, but does require cool down after first usage.
NightShade Vines: Can manifest An overgrowth of vines to block an attack at best or lessen the blow at worst. Despite the name and appearance, not actual Nightshade. Restores health/HP to members protected by spell.
Stolen Shadow: Can stun an enemy/freeze them in place by removing their Shadow. Eventually wears off. Handy for a quick escape.
Curaga: heals allies or herself by a gracious amount of Health. Gets upgraded to -Za tier around DSOD events onward.
Quick Shot: fires an Arrow/throws a knife or shrapnel at a target with precise accuracy. Can inflict bleeding effect.
Mind Crush/Penalty Game: only invoked in a Shadow Game. "The Door to Darkness has Opened...." retires/Semi-abandons this move post-DM Canon
Transform: Changes form using her Shapeshifting abilities. Stats change depending on what form she takes.
Triple Shot: fires three arrows/throws three knives or pieces of shrapnel at three targets with precise accuracy. Always inflicts bleeding effect.
Confided Curse: leans close to target, whispering something sinister in a different language (usually in Egyptian) into their ear. Inflicts any random debuff and lowers defense, can inflict a "Death's Mark" countdown on enemies.
Batter Up: only available if a Bat is equipped. Can clobber an enemy up close and inflict stun effect. Most likely to land critical hits.
Mirage Decoy: can create an illusion of an ally to take the hit for the targeted ally.
Cape Toss: tosses coat or cape in order to distract enemy target. Best used if fleeing an attack or evading a charging hit. Unavailable if no coat or cape is equipped.
Vanish: can cast a spell of light that turns the caster or target invisible.
Silent Strike: Disappears into the Shadows and strikes an enemy from behind, landing a critical hit and turning her invisible.
Curse: casts a curse on all enemies, removing all buffs and inflicting a random effect. Has a chance to inflict a "Death's Mark" countdown on an enemy.
Counter: can Counter attacks, taking half the damage and reflecting it back.
Sacrifice: Can unleash a massive attack at the expense of HP/health.
Compelling Spell: can charm a target to do something or serve her. Doesn't work on mentally strong enemies
Geas: can Magically suppress a memory.
Ultimates/One Hit KOs:
- Hands of Night: Gixyu's Shadow extends, pooling under the enemies, and shadowy hands reach up, grabbing the targets and pulling them down into the darkness.
- Obliterate: only invoked if the right monster is Summoned as an ally first. Can only be invoked once per fight, takes five turns to charge.
- Reign of Lightning: only invoked if the right monster is Summoned as an ally first. The Sky grows dark, before pillars of lightning blast down from the sky, hitting all enemies.
- Great Sandstorm: chants a spell that whips up a powerful sandstorm to cut through the enemy targets. Required to cast Aeroga before casting, takes two turns to charge.
- Castle's Fall: only invoked if the Castle of Dark Illusions was brought out via the Summon feature. The floating Castle will lose its floating status, falling down on the enemy in true colony drop fashion.
- Revenge Curse: if an enemy target took down an ally, they are dispatched the same way. Takes no effect if no ally has fallen.
- Blazing Desert Phoenix: only invoked if the right monster is Summoned as an Ally first. The flames of Phoenix Mode Ra turn blue when Gixyu is wreathed in them, and it dive bombs the targets, a wave of fire spreading throughout. Can Revive fallen allies.
- Call of Resurrection: used in DSOD events only once. Pours all energy into a resurrection incantation to summon a permanently lost ally to destroy the target. Has a high risk of the ally not responding, or being unable to.
- Blazing Glory of the Sun: Requires Gixyu to be at her full, unleashed/awakened potential. Gixyu will Change form as a result of this being invoked. Rising into the air, Light will be drawn to her as she aims a magic staff at the targeted enemies, a spell circle that appears in front of her fires out a golden blaze in the form of a bird, incinerating at full blast upon impact.
- Harmony of Light and Darkness: needs Yugi and Yami in the party. Drawing power from her allies and herself, calls down a massive pillar of light and Darkness down to smite an enemy.
- Will o' Blast: calling forth a Will o' wisp, Gixyu will turn it into a wave motion gun blast/torrent of fire that will cut through a row of enemies.
Ally Attacks/Combos:
- Six-Fisted Gambit: Needs Jonouchi (Joey), Honda (Tristan), and/or Otogi (Duke Devlin) in the party. Using a spell to call a draw of numbers, Gixyu boosts her friends' strength for a powerful set of punches once a number is drawn. The higher the number, the more the damage is boosted.
- Assassin of Dunkelheit: needs Shade Abyss in the party. Opening a series of small portals, Gixyu and Shade have a session of attacking targets at random through the portals.
- Feeding Time: needs Seto Kaiba in the party or a Blue Eyes White Dragon summoned. Gixyu will toss some scraps of meat at the enemy target, causing minimal damage. Then will whistle, getting the attention of a Blue Eyes (with Seto in the party, it's him making the call) and will direct the dragon at the target for massive damage. If the attack lands on the chance of a One Hit KO, a censor screen will appear for a moment before the attack hits, and returns to normal with the enemy completely gone.
- Magic Party Cannon: needs Pinkie Pie in the party. Loading the titular Party cannon with a few extra punches of magic, Gixyu and Pinkie will fire a blast of Magic, cake and confetti at a row of targets, inflicting damage and the confusion effect on them.
- Fastball Special: needs Webs in the party. Webs will pick up and toss Gixyu at a target for a charged attack. Best used on large/oversized opponents
- Floral Fury: needs Kit in the party. Gixyu and Kit together will call up a massive undergrowth of vines, flowers and plants that'll swarm and inflict bind on the enemy and drain health, restoring the amount drained to all party members.
- Game Session: needs Sora in the party. Sora and Gixyu will perform a variation/Combination of the Wayfinder and Session command styles, culimating in the two swinging down an energy made Hammer to strike the targets.
- Disappearing Act: needs Dark Magician Girl or Magician's Valkeria summoned. Similar to the final act of a Magician's show, the Magician in question will make a target and Gixyu disappear, acting as a one hit KO for the target, turning Gixyu invisible and inflicting Confusion effect on all remaining targets. Works in a tight pinch.
- Blackened Sun: needs Yami in the party. Combining their magical power, Gixyu and Yami will cast a spell of Shadows that coat the field in Darkness, inflicting the blind status on the targeted enemies. Attack is raised sharply for Gixyu. Three moves later, a blast of light will deal extra damage to all enemies inflicted with the blind status.
- Synchronized Bond: Needs Yugi in the party. Combining energy, Gixyu is able to cast a light spell that can target three enemies, then casts a barrier that reflects attacks back at enemies. Defense is raised sharply for Gixyu. Gixyu will block and counterattack any enemy that targets Yugi, and vice versa, with a ranged attack for the three turns/moves after the combo is made.
- Call of the Oasis: needs Anubis in the party. Unleashes a field of Effect that restores health to party members and removes debuffs, raising all of their stats for seven turns. Will cause Gixyu to transform if she's at her full awakened/unleashed potential. Blazing Glory of the Sun will automatically be activated at the end of the seventh turn.
Extra Info (In general):
- Gixyu's name was coined by Webs and the short hand, Gix, by Kit, upon seeing her for the first time and proceeding to joke that the girl was Yugi's Nobody and having the penchant of giving nicknames, respectively, due to how similar in face the two looked. Since no one was asking for her actual name (and not wanting to reveal her true name anyways), Gix went along with it as the name and nickname to refer to her as. Most of those who actually learn and hear of her true name tend to look surprised.
- As mentioned, Gixyu has a surprising (if not interesting) sense of humor when her personality is more apparent. She seems to go out of her way to make the Pharaoh break composure and laugh at certain moments.
- In relation to above, her favorite memory happens to concern a conversation at a Fast food Restaurant about Egypt, the Duties of a Pharaoh and the Egyptian Spring Festival Shemu--to quote Webs: "She said it so casually that the blasted man ended up turning as red as his hair and everyone nearly squirted soda out of their noses, mine included. No one would let Yugi or Yami live it down for weeks."
- Gixyu tends to counter snark Kaiba, usually not willing to put up with his ego. As a result, most responses to him, if not in a formal tone, are passive aggressive. She does, regardless, have a good degree of respect for him ( she just doesn't want to deal with his bullshit and won't take it sitting down if he tries to take a jab at her ), enough to refrain from taking up any challenge to compete against him in any kind of match. ("It'd be like kicking a wounded dog while it's down, I'm not like that and I respect him too much to do that.")
- When Gixyu's particular presence is revealed publicly in Domino City, many people refer to her as Yugi's Sister. When she began to publicly compete, the alibi is made more concrete (think of it as a similar situation as the Squid Sisters from Splatoon).
- In the Sibling-like relationship that eventually forms between the three, Gixyu is, surprisingly, the Middle Child--being more Mature and confident than Yugi, but still a Juvenile and (relatively) Naive compared to Yami.
- Gixyu never takes it well if she loses something she really cares about. (~she can get as hell bent and bad as John Wick when this is her major source of irritation)
- Gixyu's true name means "Dawn" or "Just Before Dawn".
- Gix can and will assert her dominance over anyone who tries to establish a pecking order by trying to bully her. Gixyu takes shit from no one.
- Favored games to play outside of Duel Monsters? Rhythm/Music Games, Tabletop and Stealth-based Games. A guilty pleasure category is Horror RPGs.
- Gixyu is particularly hard to scare. It takes a lot to truly terrify her. That doesn't mean she doesn't get nervous or scared for someone, however, if she believes they're in enough danger.
- Gixyu is a trained Omniglut, mainly preferring Japanese, English and Egyptian as her main tongues.
- That being said, when her personality is more apparent, she tends to frustratedly or sarcastically swear/curse in either Japanese and Egyptian. This has earned her pops upside the back of her head from Yugi AND Solomon/Sugoroku when she curses in front of them.
- Favorite subjects of school? Math, History, and P.E. (specifically Field and Track on the latter) she also seems to favor the study of Criminal Justice as a possible Major.
- Gixyu has better grades than Yugi (it's canonly known that Yugi is, initially, a poor study/student in terms of grades), it's to the point that she's more or less tutoring him AND Joey/Jonouchi after class. She actually does enjoy teaching/tutoring, not that it would be apparent.
- With Tea/Anzu, she's the Tomboy of the tomboy and girly girl relationship.
- The inside of what could be considered her Soul Room/Mind Room is based off of an Escape Room , all containing themes, clues and hints that are taken from parts of her memory, Experiences and personality. The more experiences and memories she has, the more chambers are added. Because she is in control, the puzzles within to go deeper can be made very difficult or relatively easy at her own discretion. Depending on who's inside, the time limit until she boots whoever is inside back out and cut the connection can be longer or shorter than an hour.
- Gixyu's Decks are always interchanging as she adapts her strategies depending on what she observes of the opponent. And she always keeps two at hand whenever she goes out--one for Duels and the other to Summon in the event of a fight/Emergency/heartless situation.
- Gixyu's signature Monsters are the remaining Kuriboh Brothers (except for Kuriboh itself) and Magician's Valkeria.
- Gixyu's "Happy Place" is the realm she was born in and had been in before she arrived in the Mortal realm.
- * it's possible that the components and time taken to make her are much older than she appears and her time of creation was quite before Yugi was ever in the picture (at least by a few decades), but due to the place she was born in having no real concept or law of time, it isn't reflected in her appearance or personality, and only subtle in her knowledge and maturity.
- ** Light Element is only apparent when she actually taps into the full potential of herself. The same goes for the symbolic meaning of the Phoenix (on the account of the different look she has in her Awakened Form)
Info to note during DSOD Events:
- Gixyu is experiencing "Achilles in His Tent" for the most part due to still suffering a period of bereavement/grief.
- After the Ceremonial Duel, Gixyu ends up getting hit by puberty first, due to the means of her "restraining bolt" in terms of her level of magic power No longer existing. The more tanning to her skin is also in relation to this.
- Due to an undisclosed incident, at some point she transferred out of Domino High School into the Black Rose Academy for Girls and moved out of the Kame Game Shop into a Dorm.
- She's grown distant from just about everyone, including her father. This distance and isolation, along with the driving incident of the Puzzle being Recovered by Kaiba, is what leads her father to ask Shade Abyss to investigate and make sure she's ok.
- She feels a strange blanket of guilt and feels like everyone's lives would be easier and safer if she kept her distance. Yugi has not given up on trying to contact her and talking sense into her.
- Due to focusing on her studies and trying to cope with her feelings of loss, she isn't aware of Aigami/Diva's grand scheme or Kaiba's particular god-defying one. Once she's made aware of both (as well as things that happen prior), she gets back into gear to protect what matters most to her, driven by determination and anger.
