Ladies and gentlemen, I'm presenting the End of the World as we know it !
I've been working on this for the past 2 months redoing the exploding planet over and over. I deleted every tries I didn't like and they had over 4GB.
When I was learning Photoshop I skipped pretty much everything about brushes, and it showed when I was doing this. The explosion looked awful, I had to learn the basics of brushing, but it's worth it. The explosion and the cracks in the planet could look better, but this is the 11th try and I don't feel like redoing it again.
Well, if you managed to read this annoying description (and even if you didn't)
Enjoy!

Software used:
Apophysis 2.09 for fractals
Terragen 2 for the close up planets
Adobe Photoshop CS5 for everything else

Main .psd size : only 457 MB!

Time spent: I really don't know, I've been redoing this for the past 2 months, so...

All pixels are mine!

I welcome critiques, tips&tricks and of course favs.
Enjoy & comment!

It's all too flat. There is no sense of perspective. The cracks look too simple, maybe add more smaller cracks and in different hues or reds and oranges to add more "oomph" to the fact the planet is falling apart. Add a starfield to the background.

Hope this helps!

I know it looks flat, but I really have no idea how to give it any perspective, I've tried putting a black fractal over it, but that didn't work.
And thanks for the tip about the cracks, that should be useful.
I forgot I didn't add a starfield! Duh! I probably forgot because of the fractal nebula.
And yes, thanks, it definitely helps.
Eh, and, don't YOU know any tips to add the illusion of perspective?

Well I'll admit I sometimes have the same problem with perspectives. But the main thing to remember is that objects closer to the foreground always have harder and sharper shadows than those in the background. Also as objects are farther and farther into the background they start to get blurry and loose color (depending on the object of course).

When you work on a scene it's always best to determine from where the main source light is coming from. That way you can play with the shadows.

Also add some other elements apart from the planets and the nebula. Like maybe comets or asteroids or ships. These kinds of stuff also helps determine the over-all size of what's what on the scene and gives a deeper sense of perspective.

I think that's about it XD! Keep practicing and you'll get better and better.

So, you mean depth of field. The object you're looking at/want people to look at should be sharp and other should be blurry depending on their distance from the focused object?

Well, I suck so much at 3D so ships are outta the question, but asteroids, yeah, I could do that.

Thank you very much! That'll be very helpful!
And sorry for the late response, my ISP had some, uh downtime, don't know anything else.

Not yet, they're just enjoying the show now. They WILL scream when they'll realize that the remains of the planet are going to crash with'em
Muah-hahahaHAAA

I like this... i often imagine what its like to be on the chunk of a planted that was launched into space... would you be alive long enough to look over the edge and see that all is over for you... how long would gravity keep you bounded to what is now essentially an asteroid good job dude ^_^

Thanks.
And to your hypothesis:
In this case that I'm illustrating, the gravity would be still pretty strong on the biggest chunk, but would get really weak on those smaller ones, which would result in atmosphere going to space completely. And in my case, the shockwave and the quakes from the explosion would probably kill you before you could look... over the Edge.
But being on an launched asteroid, your ability to look over the edge would only depend on how much atmosphere it had and it's mass for being able to maintain the atmosphere.
That IS interesting, I have to think about it.
Anyway, I'm GLaD you like it

After two months of progress, the result is absolutely captivating.
I love how you've done the exploding body, and I love the background.
