*sits back and interlaces fingers* Foooooled yooou.Well, some of you either picked up on the hints, or desperately wished, that something wasn't what it seemed. There were some small things in this chapter (for example Jasper touching Steven's hand to comfort him, Peridot acting all weird). And remember waaaay back on the third page of the comic, that Steven started telling Jasper about Secret Team? Yep.

I mean, I know I've given this comic a lot of flack over time, and I know you said Jasper's just playing the part of a bad guy to resolve the conflict in the team (that she started, but that's a whole other argument), but the way Steven and Peridot reacted coupled with Steven's actual tears implies to me that she didn't tell them about this little switcheroo.
In other words, for all intents and purposes Steven thinks he just saw one of his mother figures die.
