Description I've always, and i mean always, did i mention always? wanted to draw an Aztec warrior, or things in their mythology.

When I finally got the chance, i was rather troubled, for one thing, I think we all know the key things that make them stand out from the rest of the culture, first and most of all the feather work.

So I know straight out that i need a good design of that, I'm more or less happy with it, but the thing that made me troubled was that, I was hoping to make him in my style, like, when someone see it, they dont see it as a historically correct replica, but something that obviously is aztec, but has a style to its own. I think the blade is something like that, but for his overall look, its pretty much no innovative ideas. @__@ just my 2 cents. Heres hoping i get more chances for such a theme.

well maybe when commission comes i could ask you to make my ''Aztec'' character but in your style fused with some customs stuff in my brain you might like the idea I got in my brain right now I'm building up the description until the commissions comes until then nice job Wen!

my character is not historically accurate it's more anima style (anyway my character is of basano ethnicity and he is a warrior acrobat (war dance kind of fighting style) with a hint of mythical stuff his two swords are a similar style to this picture but I'll fill you in with the details later on. but yeah not the average typical kind of character that will stay in a tribe for long but I can tell you that in his background it was a baby who got raised in some kind of aztec tribe in the Itzi so a jungle little guy who learned the war dance style of combat plus capoeira mixed to sword play and that he learned how to forge in this tribe black steel but mainly the story is about him trying to challenge the old gods of these tribes in order to gain a power only he could bare but it's still in construction he is left behind by his tribe at some point travels the world and make some kind of black steel with kind of ruby veins in his armor but yeah I'll have to figure out more details to make it like dark fantasy style just like anima can be! Still I'm looking forward to commissions!!! ^^

OhmyGod he's beautiful owo Not that I've got the fun-fun-spending-monies to commission you or anything, but I'd love to have you draw another Aztec character >~> And then I'd hide it away in my room. Not creepy at all. Right?

This is probably my favorite of your hero designs, Wen-M. I don't know much about Aztec culture, but I can tell you did a lot of research.

Of course, Research+Artistic License= Totally Rad design!

Yeah, you right, this is sad. Sometimes we dont see the wonderful things or histories of our own culture. Maybe because is ours... irony of life.

I agree face isn't the better part, but the whole character is amazing! It looks really epic as it should.

And I share your intent of revisiting the classic aztec look with a touch of personal style, we do not really need more "exact replicas", if we do we can have it on histoy books.

Congratulations to you for such an excellent work!

Wen-M, I love your stuff (I mean, I've been watching you for years), and I adoooore everything about this...except his face. It's reminiscent of Street Fighter, and in this case it's not a great thing. His outfit, weapons, and tattoos are so complex and clean, but I feel his face takes away from the whole mood the rest of him is setting. :/
Obviously, I am HARDLY qualified to critique you of all people, but I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Nidalan [2011-05-16 08:32:45 +0000 UTC]

I must say that the first thing that strikes me about this picture is his face. It doesn't seem to match the rest of his body. It's too adolescent for the masculine, adult body he has. Your work in detail is, as always, unreal, but I would suggest changing the face and neck to match the rest of him more.

godbhaal In reply to Nidalan [2011-05-25 09:33:58 +0000 UTC]

Totally agree. The face is too adolescent/'femenine' for the body.
For the rest, my congratulations.

you should research on the weapopnery of the mesoamerican cultures , they had for example a weapons similar to this one but with shark teeth instead of the sharpened obsidians ( these "swords btw ae called macuahuitl ), the had this simpole yet very efficient device to throw spears and lances , it gave thenm so much power that they were able to pierce through the spaniards metal armors , Im mexican and love aztec an mayan mythology and culture , hope this serves as a little bit of inspiration , and if you EVER need help finding something related to this topics or maybe the meanings behind their atire , please do ask me, because I'd love to see more of my beloved culture from one of my beloved artists , and I'd love to help

LuminousShadow92 In reply to kingest [2011-06-04 22:56:26 +0000 UTC]

The spear throwing device called the 'Atlatl' right? That's not an ancient Mexican device per say though. Atlatls have been found scattered all over the world in ancient/primitive cultures, some Africans still hunt with them. The Aztecs still used it during the 1400's and 1500's because they were still in their stone age (which is no insult, much more likely a compliment because apparently they didn't feel the urge to develop unlike Europe). Recent research has also pointed out that Atlatls did not launch spears, they launched arrows similar to that of a bow, only the Atlatl arrows are much larger (sometimes coming up to 3 meters tall). If you launch such an arrow with the Atlatl compared to a spear, you'll notice it deals much greater damage and contains much more acceleration and power, because of it's flexibility.
Why I told you all of this? I really don't know, bit bored lol .
And Wen-M, wonderful piece as always .
