Strange, I've always pictured the basilisk as a form of cockatrice (or vice versa). Maybe in my resources they sounded the same, or it could be the similar forms used in MegaTen but with different coloration.

What sources do you normally use to find these? I typically use a mythology dictionary.

actually, I don't know why people confuse the two creatures...in my understanding they are physically very different.

i first learned about them from various RPGs, but the cockatrice always had a chicken or rooster head of some kind, and a scaled body with two legs, while the basilisk is almost always a lizard with more than 6 legs. the only thing similar is that they both have scales and can petrify, but i mean...a Gorgon and a basilisk have the same two things as well.... I dont know. XD
