Description
See it in Full View please. At least for me, it is showing in a JPGed thumbnailThis idea is one that I had several months ago, but the first attempt at it was horrible. Now that I gathered more knowledge at pixel art, as well as practiced more, I could finally finish it.
Nothing hidden here. Just a plain chess board with standard pieces (and some of them were very complicated for me to do...I just have to practice more in giving details to small sprites). They are based on a set I found there, so if they don't look like the ones you know, that's the reason. I used this piece to practice more on isometric view images, as well as coloring/shading techniques using a limited palette.
Hmm...to tell you the truth, I don't like chess too much, besides, I don't know how to play, but I always liked the boards and piece sets, as well as respecting the game itself, as it needs a good amount of thinking and strategy knowledge to be a good player.
Specs: totally made in Paint Shop Pro. No filters of any kind were used. Total of colors used: 20 (including transparency).

added this to favs at school and forgot to comment when i got home..so, here we go:
Very nice! much better than yor previous work, the one thing i think you could add to it is some shadows, give the peices a more obvious connection to the board, and like zoggles said harsher shading, thouh i dont agree with the simplified shapes thing, althouh it would look good i think it would take more skill to pull of the peices in a realistic manner like you have, a bit more distinction between the king and queen wouldnt hurt either, but it is still a great peice

Great job but i think the white pieces could use some more shading. Either it's me or they miss something. Perhaps some dark innerlines? I dunno
Anyway, GJ nontheless

Very nice though could maybe do with a bit more contrast on the black pieces and perhaps a more obvious and lighter highlight/reflection.
Have you considered doing a more abstraact chess set? With simplistic shapes that maintain a recognisable aspect of their couterparts? (eg the diagonal slit on the bishops head maybe used on a cylindrical shape or something?)

An abstract chess set sounds like a good idea, a more modern looking set, I know what you mean when you talk about the pieces.

Paint shop pro? I didn't know that you could make hella good pixel art with it. Heh, though, then again, I'm not too familiar with the program so I won't make any assumptions.
Call me a sucker for chess (which I am, by the way) it looks really great. Awesome work here -- I'm mentally thinking of moves in my head right now (yeah, I'm a big geek).
