Description
See it in Full View please. At least for me, it is showing in a JPGed thumbnailThis idea is one that I had several months ago, but the first attempt at it was horrible. Now that I gathered more knowledge at pixel art, as well as practiced more, I could finally finish it.
Nothing hidden here. Just a plain chess board with standard pieces (and some of them were very complicated for me to do...I just have to practice more in giving details to small sprites). They are based on a set I found there, so if they don't look like the ones you know, that's the reason. I used this piece to practice more on isometric view images, as well as coloring/shading techniques using a limited palette.
Hmm...to tell you the truth, I don't like chess too much, besides, I don't know how to play, but I always liked the boards and piece sets, as well as respecting the game itself, as it needs a good amount of thinking and strategy knowledge to be a good player.
Specs: totally made in Paint Shop Pro. No filters of any kind were used. Total of colors used: 20 (including transparency).

very lovely. I notice, being a chess player myself, that you really did study the board. You even got the eight by eight squared board right. Many people don't. I applaud you. xD
Very nice. I'm not very good at pixel art, myself, so I'm very impressed with how much work you had to have put into it.
5 stars.

That looks great, all the pieces are perfect, down to the cute little pawns... I guess chess isn't for everyone, I'm not good at tactics and stuff.

Oooh! Very nice and clean. Great shading, like on the balls of pawns. Maybe you should try altering color scheme so to have a glass chess set? That would be rockin!

Damn, look at the details!! But too bad you didn't put shadows for the chess pieces. But, still, its a very nice pixel work.

The black pieces kinda run together. I dunno what you could do to fix that since I know nothing about pixel art. It has to do with contrast, because the white pieces all stand out as individual pieces because of their black borders. Other than that this is an awesome piece!

Very nice job at an isometric isoplane pixelation!
Some Commends and Critique Though...
The Pawns...
The bottom of the pawn, where the line first comes up to meet the balls from the crown, should be me pronouced, with the shading changing alot (contrast) will the give the part where the ball meets the base, more of a rising tone
The base of the pawns, seem to curl rather than wrap around, i think this could be fixed by making the base more flat, or making the shading on the base be more prominent (sp) then the abouve part
The Knights...
On the back view of the knights, the dithering shading makes it look like 2 seperate peices, i think this could be prevented by msaking it de-dither when wrapping around, instead of a bright pixel line
Other than that, great job, and an awesome deviation!

Wow that's a smooth piece of work - I love the shading within the 'sprite' outlines, especially on the white pieces.

Chess is my favorite game. I have no less than 7 sets in my house. Ranging from the table set to the portable magnettic set. Traditional and outlandish sets. They all rule.
This is extremely nicely done.
My only criticism might be color choice is ugly for the board but what do I know. Thats a matter of personal preference anyways.
I applaud your skill with the pixel.
This gets a brainless

Impressive pixel work... I think if you added some subtle shadows to it; it would really finish it off. Maybe make the white ones glass as well... now that would be cool.
But overall, great work... and skilfully executed

I may not represent the ruling faction of thought, but I enjoy the more subtle shading of the white pieces. It allows me to focus on their outline and emphasizes how they cut away at the checkerboard below them. A satisfying image, definitely.
