Description "A Year To Forget"
oils
december 2010 - august 2011

Over the course of 7 months, this painting was the visual journal while wrestling through the pain and the anger from the impact of a destructive scene in my life. It was extremely difficult to come up with an image that was accurate enough to express the pain. Eventually I came up with a scene of a little boy in a forest marked with red X's to get cut down.....and the boy is marked with one too.

This is one of my favorites because I feel like it brings us back to the heart of an artist's artwork ........where it's an outlet for honest release, and sincere expression of oneself in the wrestle of life's hurts and joy's.

I can't tell you how much I love this. I loved it when I saw the thumbnail, and loved it more when I understood it in full view.

Amazing work, and thank you for sharing such a personal piece.

I can't look at this for more than four seconds without looking away, taking a deep breath and coming back to explore the beautiful yet frightening space between the trees where a boy stands with a red x painted on his back. I feel like there are so many symbolic things in this painting that I can't quite understand, but I don't need to as long as I know that there was a thought or memory behind what you painted, to you. Deeply moving and haunting, and so beautiful I can't help tearing up a little.

There are no words to describe what you have done with this piece, and related pieces. It is artfully executed in a way that makes it almost too intense to look at, yet too captivating to look away from. Not only does it peak my interest, but also wrenches my heart out with the message it portrays (especially after reading the description). You, sir, are an artist that artists strive to be, incredible work!

Also, kudos to you and being able to show this painful journey of yours to our very humble eyes. I don't want to say something about healing, and knowing your pain, cus' I don't, and I never will. But, if you ever need a hug (even if it is just in cyber-form) I'm always open to one, and I'm sure many other compassionate Deviants on here are as well!

I love art that represents life, and you know, sometimes art pieces run in sequences. I can already see some green leaves peaking out from a future painting, where the forest is vibrantly alive, and the boy is not alone. Much love to you.

oh my. you are a brave young man. I would be proud to have you for a son! (I have a son; I am proud of him too ).

There will be many, many 'fathers' in your life. Men who will be a positive influence for you, who will love you unconditionally. Maybe a grandfather, or uncle, or brother in law. I am so sorry your own couldn't appreciate you.

You have survived. Your artwork is breathtakingly painful, exquisitely personal and raw. You are as talented as you are brave! God bless you on your journey to forgiveness, healing, and becoming whole.

Ahh, even before I read the artist's comments I saw the boy's X and knew what it meant. When I finally saw him, my hair stood on end and I got goosebumps (and a little spooked). The image is a bit disturbing to me, but I like it because I know what that's like too. Love the use of color.

From the thumbnail, I thought the candle was a person looking down. But then, I see a person in a similar pose by the woods. I like it

wesleyayers In reply to Tekamza [2011-09-05 04:35:18 +0000 UTC]

the candle [is] a person looking down
It's a little ambiguous, but that's intentional....kinda like the person under the roots of the tree in my painting, the weeping: [link]

the candle is the image of the " present tense adult" me, and the boy is, when I was a boy
thank you

It makes the art deeper hearing the thoughts that went into the painting

I really do not know what to say. Your artwork is so raw and emotional that it almost hurts to look at because you can feel it so strongly. These paintings are beautiful but the emotion in them is what makes them so incredible. I feel as if i am about to fall into your work because each is its own world. Very unique work and just plain wonderful. Keep painting. <3

well... no one else seems to have noticed that your candle has been burning in a pretty strong wind for a while there my friend but where others see only eeriness i see providence.... also that the trees are all marked for destruction, or perhaps as a sign of plague, a herald perhaps of things to come?
i think i get what you are getting at.
