It varies from one telling to the next. Sometimes it's 'darkest,' sometimes 'blackest.' I've heard it done both ways.

I know of that oath, but it isn't nearly as catchy. Then again, there are other oaths to call on

Try explaining the whole Green Lantern thing to an entire species of blind aliens living in a colorless, starless galaxy.

Well, yes. The "Lantern" who uses this oath is Rot Lop Fan, and his entire species has no sense of sight. Because of that, they cannot possibly grasp the notion of color, light, darkness, day, night, and they cannot understand the function of a lantern. For that reason, they had to sorta interpret the ring and it's powers in terms of sound instead of light, so it went from "Green Lantern" to "F-Sharp Bell," because they have bells in place of lanterns, and Rot Lop Fan likes the f-sharp pitch. It's an Alan Moore story, and frankly, I thought it was very clever.

Speaking of different interpretations, I saw Batman using Hal's ring in a recent comic. That, was pretty cool, the combination of my two favourite heroes, Green Lantern and the Batman. Kinda makes you wonder how Batman's comic would be if he was a Green Lantern instead of Hal...
