Well, they both have fairly abrasive personalities, which is why I thought to combine them in the first place (plus her dynamic with Steven mirrors Damian’s relationship with Superboy, both boys are cinnamon rolls), but amazingly it does seem like Peridot made more progress over the course of Steven Universe than Damian has since Grant Morrison introduced him.
Between DC’s resistance to change and Sugar’s penchant for character development, it’s not surprising, but I think it also has to do with the fact that Peridot realized that she needed to change to adapt to her new circumstances when she found herself stranded and captured, which is what led to her heel turn in the end. Damian, on the other hand, is constantly trying to prove himself as a worthy heir to his father. He honestly believes that he’s the next Batman, and that is a hell of a lot of pressure for a kid to take on, and the fact that he was raised in a hole by murderous zealots probably didn’t help his emotional development either.
So yeah, it’s no wonder he’s a little shit.
