Description "There's nothing more you can do for me, Dashie... Go, live your life anew... and when you remember me... Smile."

This is sorta kinda a redraw of this old piece of art:  ? I dunno.
I just looked at this picture recently and thought: "Hey, why not draw this moment again and see where my imagination can go with this?" and that's what I ended up with!

A little tragic piece from the Count of Monte Rainbow AU (or whatever you wanna call that).
Edmond Dashie has been imprisoned for fourteen years already, spending his first years between the cold walls of Château D'If completely alone. After some time he met Abbe Pinkia, who became a dear and only friend to him in those hard years of imprisonment. They planned to escape from Château D'If by digging a tunnel leading outside the massive walls of this terrific prison together, but years have been cruel to Pinkia as she started to slowly fade away and loose all hope of getting to freedom. After some time she became very ill and could not work on the tunnel anymore as much as she could not stand on her pink hooves anymore. Dashie continued to dig the tunnel outside the Chateau D'If while taking care of Abbe Pinkia when the guards are away from their cells, but, unfortunately, there's nothing more Dashie could've done for Pinkia. Her time has come.

Oh my goodness, where to start! I love the more pencil like style, it adds a more grey and shaded tone. The expression on Edmund's face is so detailed and strong that you can really feel his pain. The hair is also incredible, and the detail and shininess of it is really amazing. I always love seeing art for these two together, because no one really illustrates them. The backround got just a tab bit sloppy, but overall the detail of the marks on the wall is wonderful. I also just noticed the scratch marks on Edmund's flank and how it shows that his cutie mark was scratched off. Like your work before, five out of five stars!

Impressive piece of art it really shows how much you improved .You can actually see the grief in Edmond Dashie's eyes when he/she looks at Abe Pinkia his/her friend during the imprisonment. The poor pink pony will be missed.

The pose that they both are show the emotional breakdown the future Count is having and it is truly wonderful. This piece has a lot of emotion ,the colors blend in well, even if they are darker they do a good job by capturing the grief of having a friend slowly pass on in your arms.

To end this i want to tell you, good job .

Not since his wedding was interrupted by the royal guards fourteen years ago and he was dragged away to the Chateau d'If had Edmond Dashie ever felt such pain. He never thought he would feel anymore agony since he was ripped away from Shycedes arms. But now, here was his friend Abbe Pinkanima dying in his arms. Why oh why, Dashie asked himself, did he not push Abbe out of the way when he heard the first crack? His instincts yelled at him of the danger yet he didn't listen and continued digging.

And as a result, the life of one who has taught him so much and made every day a little brighter during his imprisonment was steadily fading...

"Dear God! Abbe my friend, fret not! You mended my wings, and I can mend your back! The doctor here, he is a harsh man but not heartless. He will...!" Edmond began as he talked in a loud panic, not caring if the guards heard  him, but then stopped as he heard a sound from the pink stallion.

...It was laughter.
Abbe Pinkanima was laughing as he was slowly dying. Edmond blinked in surprise at this as he looked upon the pink stallion's gleeful yet pained face. After a bit of laughing, and coughing as his lungs were hurt, Abbe looked at his friend with a weak smile.

"Do not bother...Dashie, my friend. There is....nothing that can be...done...for me." Abbe spoke between ragged intakes of breath.

"No, no! There is something that can be done! Just let me help! You have taught me so much, Abbe, I know I can heal your body - " But Edmond was cut off by a shout from former priest.

"EDMOND!!" Abbe shouted as he looked at the dull colored Pegasus with a hard expression. Edmond flinched and his ears turned backwards in shameful fear, as he wasn't been yelled at like that since he was a young colt and his father scolded him. Once he had the younger stallion's attention Abbe's face turned soft again as he spoke. "Please, do not waste your efforts...All souls pass, and mine...is no different. To prevent the natural flow of life...is to defy God's will. And you do not wish to do that...do you?"

"I-I....N-No, I don't. But surely, there is SOMETHING I can do! Prolong your life just a little longer so that you can taste freedom again and feel the grass beneath your hooves and not die only remembering the cold, unforgiving stone of this wretched place." Edmond rambled on, eyes shining bright with unshed tears.

At his words, Abbe just gave a weak nonchalant wave of his hoof.

"Ah, what is the feel of grass to someone who has left all of the textures there are in the world? It would not do me any good, my friend. Rather than prolong my life to feel something I already know, I'd rather spend my remaining moments...having a nice laugh." Abbe said.

"Laugh? You would choose to spend your final moments laughing HERE - of all places - instead of tasting fresh air once more?" Edmond asked in shock.

"Yes, I would." Replied Abbe with a single nod.

"...Insane. You are INSANE!" Edmond exclaimed as he looked at the dying former earth pony in his arms with a mixture of grief and frustration, his tears finally breaking free from his eyes. "Your name as the Mad Priest is well deserved. Only a mad pony would choose laughter over freedom!"

"Heh. Perhaps...But, Dashie, I always knew that...freedom was not in my future. If it was, I would not...be here to begin with. I would not have met you...However, God has given me a chance...to redeem any and all transgressions I have...by giving you a chance...to gain freedom. And so, if I cannot join you in that freedom to - as you say - feel the grass again...then yes I would rather...laugh." Abbe explained and began to cough violently, bloody spittle flying onto Edmond's prison garb.

"No, no, Abbe please! Save your strength! Just...try to live. If not for yourself, than for me." Edmond said as the frustration left his face and his dreary blue muzzle now adorned an expression of sorrow while he cried more.

"I'm sorry, Dashie, but I must deny you this once. I...have no will to live any longer. However, I ask you to live for me. And more importantly, live for redemption. Can you do that for me...my friend?" Abbe asked.

Edmond wanted to protest, tell the former priest that he will be alright, but deep down he knew that everything his friend said was true. His time was steadily running short. He would not live to see the outside of this prison. There was nothing that could be done. With that in mind he decided that the least he could do was grant Abbe's final wish since he was unable to save his life. And so, with a tearful smile, Edmond nodded.

"Yes. I can do that, Abbe. For you I will live." Edmond replied.

So...I missed your birthday, and wishing you a Merry Christmas. I feel kind of jerkish. I won't bore you with the details of what kept me busy and why I have been off the radar - again - but I hope this new story comment makes up for my absence in some way.

Happy belated Birthday, , and I wish you a belated happy holidays!

I don't really know why, but I really liked the moment where Edmond started to scream and Abbe that he is insane while panicking over him dying. This is a strong and quite painful moment, I think.

TurquoiseThought [2017-12-02 17:18:04 +0000 UTC]

"The real treasure's been you." I think that line from the other Monte Cristo musical (composed by Matt Dahan.) really puts Edmond and Faria's friendship into a one sentence. The count of Monte Cristo might have found the gold and riches but Edmond Dantés still lost one he found. He shared his pain with Faria and together they spent so many years in prison both desperate for freedom.

And this artwork shows their feelings so strongly. I almost start crying when I see this. Edmund Dashie's pain and Pinkia's calmness just makes it so effective. I can feel Edmund's pain of loosing a long time friend. And how Abbe Pinkia is ready to meet her fate. Excellent work there! Also their manes look amazing! Those manes have a very good lighting and shading in them. Poses are very good and natural. The colours in this artwork blend to each others very well. With colourful ponies it can be hard to make them fit into more darker environments but you nailed it! The background has enough details to look great. Overall, this artwork is fantastic and it has so much emotion in it! Astonishing piece of art!

Edmond didn't even have the time to mourn about his dead friend because he needed to hurry so much with his escape, and then try not to drown in the sea...
Aww, thank you so much!

Yeah. That book is just tragic in some parts... But I guess it's one of those things that makes it so good. It makes the reader feel and so makes the book more effective. (sorry, I'm starting to get analytical again )

Wow, I already found the original to be really good, it's really amazing how much your artstyle actually has evolved since then xD There's so much more details in this, the expressions are much more impactfull and all the scratches and dirt on them really makes it look like they've been digging on their escape tunnel for years. Excellent work!!

Oh my god... This looks beautiful. The expressions, the lighting, every detail! All the scratch marks on the walls... You know how Monsparkle was remaking some old synthesia covers? It would be so cool to see this in the background if he ever redoes "When We Are Kings". Do you two talk a lot anyways? Again, amazing art. ^^

And I'm not sure if Monsparkle will redo his synthesia with this background, although I CAN IMAGINE him planning to do that since he had been wanting to redo some of his older synthesias for quite some time. We actually talk quite a lot with each other, at least we tend to chat at least once a week, usually on weekends.
And thanks again :3

Damn das some good arting.

So this character dies via illness/old age? I was always given the impression that he died in a tunnel collapse... Dying of age or illness is waaaay sadder, which really adds to the tragedy of it all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

whatevstu In reply to Martyn-Arts [2017-12-01 13:48:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! ^-^

Abbe Faria died from a terrible illness in the novel, but in the musical and, as far as I know, in the movie they made him die when the tunnel they were digging collapsed on him. Both of those deaths quite terrible and sad in their own ways, but I stick with the one from the novel, for now.
The whole tunnel collapse concept is actually pretty tragic too, but it raises too many questions like: "Why didn't the guards hear the collapse?" or "If the tunnel collapsed and they were probably digging under other prisoner's cell why no one noticed that and didn't ring the alarm? This collapse could probably damage and destroy some parts of Chateau D'If, right?" and all that.

Martyn-Arts In reply to whatevstu [2017-12-04 01:27:28 +0000 UTC]

Damn thas cool...

I think story-wise I still prefer him dying of illness or old age, just as symbolism for the prison finally getting to him, but honestly either one is good for dramatic effect, even if one comes with those plot holes.

Thanks for the explanation and details! I enjoyed reading 'em!
