Description Final version!---
I wanted to do something a little different than angel vs. devil, but still have two physical entities depicted in a struggle.

In this case, I used stock images of myself as reference for each of the entities...

This image isn't to be taken literally. There are two meanings behind this that are very personal to me, and I am sure many others.

The most obvious, it's about the struggle everyone has to be who they want to be... do you make the selfish decision, or do you make the selfless one... Sometimes I find my selfish self making the decisions more, and I have to fight her back!

It's also about fighting with your reflection. Who you think you are can sometimes be skewed by what you see when you look in the mirror. You don't always see yourself as the whole, but tend to nitpick on tiny little flaws. This is about the feeling each individual has when they look in the mirror, whatever that feeling is. Everyone has things they aren't pleased with about themselves whether physically or mentally, and they rear their ugly heads every time you look in the mirror.

Thank you so much for the compliment. I'm sat here feeling just a little bummed that I didn't make the semifinals... but I see why, with many of the amazing works in the semifinals! But your comment definitely cheers me up.

Thanks so much!

Wow!! and I mean it, I've liked many entries before but this is the first one to actually surprise me.
In fact, the creepy girl in the mirror scared me O___O your drawing is beautiful and the composition is very well done, loved the detail of their hands connecting and the broken mirror, man! she's coming out!!!

This is awesome, so good luck in the contest!!

you keep getting better and better, wow, the only thing I would point is the girl's facial expression (the human looking one ) she doesn't seem too amazed or intent, her facial expression needs to be more engaging somehow, but I do love the face in the mirror.

I wish you the best with it, hope you place!

whimsi In reply to FaMz [2009-05-24 21:10:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!

I know that her face looks very... minorly surprised rather than shocked or afraid... I tried to redo her face about 3 times, and each time her expression got away from me and ended up too bland... The deadline came too soon, and I had to just submit it as it was, but this is definitely something I am working on for future pieces

Thanks again for your comments

You should win with this. Absolutely gorgeous work and the overall effect is brilliant. Instant fave again, now it's finished.

Although there is a hyperrealistic quality to it, I love the slightly stylised affect you have retained. There is a purity of texture that makes it instantly noticeable. The way you have depicted the contact between the two opposite hands, with a kind of sparkling static lightning, works so well (I can smell the ozone and hear the buzz and crackle!). And you have been very clever to capitalize on that energy, by making the raised hand of your evil twin glow transparent. Cool, or should I say hot!! Nice idea that!

But it is just the illumination and shadow that is awesome - pure and simple again - this is what makes it leap out to me.

Really well done on this - Bravo! Whether you win or not, you should be very proud of this And again hope you win with this!

(Have just had a quick look at the entries so far and I cannot see anything to compare with the originality and quality of your offering!)

eeee.

I can't wait for the results. Even if I don't win, it's still a great piece to add to my portfolio... I worked so hard on it.

Thank you very much for your kind words, I am feeling a little crazy right now, a mix between wanting to win so so so bad... and despairing at the number of entries. I also don't have a huge audience of my own, so winning community choice is hardly a possibility, unless someone really popular comes along and decides to pimp it out for me... lol. No matter though, I had a LOT of fun painting it.

I wasn't even going to enter, but I had this idea the moment I read about the theme of the contest, so I thought, why not, eh?

Thanks again!

It's got to be exciting though - watching all the entries coming in and comparing!

What are the rules? How is the winning work selected?

The main thing, as you say, is that you've had a lot of fun and got a really good piece for your portfolio. Working towards something is always the best way to get me up and working.

Whatever the outcome you still have a fantastic creation there!!

whimsi In reply to Thricelight [2009-05-21 14:51:51 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, the theme had to be "Good vs. Evil"

There weren't a lot of rules other than legal BS to allow Wacom to use images for marketing, like no signature marks or anything on it etc.

The winning work is selected in this fashion:
Deviantart staff drill the copious amounts of entries down to 50 semi-finalists, then the 50 finalists are judged by wacom international staff.

There are 1st-3rd place winners selected by the Wacom staff, and then there is also the Community Choice winner which will be the one with the most faves between May 29 and June 4, I think.

Oh! Thanks for that!

Yes you will stand a very good chance if it's down to actual judging - if there's any justice left in this land called DA!

Keep your spirits up - you're a winner with that picture, whether you win or lose, because you've shown yourself what you are capable of.

Thanks so much for the encouraging words. I am pinned between being super eager for the results, and despairing that there are so many entries... I've never won anything in my life, except a barbie in a raffle when I was 6... so I am getting really anxious about this contest XD

Either way, it will be a good addition to my portfolio

Thanks again!

Thanks so much. I feel like Charlie Bucket hoping for a golden ticket here... seems highly unlikely that I will win, given how many entries there are, but I want it sooo bad I've never won anything in my life, so if I even get honorable mention, I'll squee.

I like the improvements you have done, the face of the mirror self is creepy, but I really like it. Maybe you could add a little more texture to the skin?
I really like the work on the hand though and on the light-symbol thing, it looks pretty realistic! Good luck there, I really hope you can finish it in time!

whimsi In reply to Nirelleth [2009-05-12 16:44:38 +0000 UTC]

Me too! I am racing, working every day after work until pretty much time to go to bed XD

Thank you very much for the comments. I think I do need a lot more texture to the skin. I'd like to add a lot of grain and anomalies like freckles and moles to make it see more realistic.

Thanks again!

Love seeing work in progress like this. fascinating to see how artists work out what they see in their imagination. As the above critique states. this is already coming along superbly! particularly the lighting. This is working really effectively to create the mood I'm sure you're after. Good luck with all those light sources - quite a challenge!
