Call me weird, but I usually find drawing a character without an outline difficult! Always ends up looking piecemeal with me

In photoshop (and similar digital art programs) it's pretty easy.
I just do the line art in the exact same colors I intend to use to color it.
The end result is after I finish the line art and color it in, the lines disappear due to being the exact same color as the coloring.

I was always curious, why does he always carry his sword? Why doesn't he just tie it to him, or at least tuck it into his belt?

I would think it's because that sort of sheath can't be tied.
It's smooth all the way from end to end. No notches or hilts or anything to tie it with. If it tried, it'd probably just slip right through.
Also I think I read somewhere that the techniques he uses require him to hold it in his hand.
But more practically speaking, I just think tying it would be impossible, given its shape.
