Another tutorial!! Something different this time. This tutorial shows you how to make a sausage bun out of polymer clay. (lol, I made this look like such a big deal and stuff, but really, it's a simple thing that's very easy to make... I don't know how this ended up being so long winded...-__-) IGNORE the LAME intro btw, it's there just to fill space...

This is how I made [link] (though I changed my methods a bit, the process is still the same..) You can turn your creation into a charm, to be used as a keychain, etc. or just as a decoration or items for dolls.

I’ve decided not to call this a “hot dog” bun because I did not want it to be confused with the bun that hot dogs sits in (in an American hot dog) … sorry if I confused anyone in the process of trying to be NOT confusing! xD Nevermind.

I used different clay here: Sculpey III, Premo Sculpey, FIMO, craft smart, Sculpey Bake Shop… and although there are some individual differences between these (Premo I find to be a bit more crumbly/hard than the others) the baked product/outcome is pretty much the same to me…

Soft pastels/chalk pastels are really useful for colouring clay. I don’t recommend using oil pastels though. I tried it once and the clay just didn’t pick up the colours as well and I got a lot of specks/flakes of colour that won’t go away… or maybe that’s just me. I also don’t recommend using chalk…

I used a glove again because I tend to leave ugly looking fingerprints on the clay. T_T

I don’t know what the pointy thing is… it was just there in my kitchen…!

Ah that was long…>_< Well I hope you all enjoy this/find this useful!
Let me know what your buns turn out like~~
And lasty,

Thank you!

Premo clay, just brushing on some pastel dust, it stays through the baking process? ... without the varnish, does the color stay? The bread base was very plain, does pastel color work on contrasting colors? like green on purple clay? or is it only similar colors like yellow on orange?

whitefrosty In reply to Silver-Kit [2013-06-04 15:07:58 +0000 UTC]

I think the color should stay without any problems but if there is repeated contact with the item then the color may rub off, the best thing would be to use some varnish or finishing spray to seal it. I am not sure about contrasting colors, but with my experience, chalk pastels aren't very pigmented so if you want to color a darker shade clay with a lighter shade pastel pigment then you will need a lot of layers of pastel dust in order for the color to show up.

I am not sure if you realize this, but you ended up making a 'pig in a blanket'

Yes, people have mentioned it. I am more familiar with the hot dog bun though, because of my culture.

Awesome tutorial, thank you!
I've got a little question though:
Do pastels only work when the clay isn't baked or is there a way to use them even after baking? If not, can you recommend some other paints/brands?
Thanks in advance!

whitefrosty In reply to ProfelisAurata [2012-09-27 22:19:39 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Sorry for this late reply! >_<
I think putting on pastels before the clay is baked is easier because the pigment tends to 'stick' better to the surface of the clay. You can still use them after baking, but the color might rub off easier, so you need to seal the piece with some varnish or something.

Ignore my last stupid comment. My iPad hates this website and makes the keyboard I write on disappear while I'm trying to type so it make me hit 'send' and stuff...

Any who, this is very lovely. And LOL, number 6 'pointy stick' is a skewer for making stuff like kabob. :333

Wow, today I learned what a sausage bun was! Reminds me of Pigs in a Blanket or something to that extent.

The idea of using pastel shavings to help achieve realistic colour is a great idea!
