Description
Cover for Jay Company's Variant issue #1 of Mercy Thompson published by Dabel Bros.Lines by Eric Basaldua
Colors by me.
this one was like a dream really, when eric said he was going home to draw this one night i was so jealous thinking somebody else would get to color an ebas cover with wolves (my favorite animal)
when i started this (flatting it myself) i was really pumped about it, and promptly jumped right in to it feet first.
one thing about jumping into a cover is when you go in only with half your heart you might end up coming back out of it a little before you are done, but you stay safe in knowing you wont be over-thinking anything. but when you jump in feet first, you fall into it and can have your heart broken, much like love in fact.
i had my heart broken, as this didn't exactly turn out as i wanted. i guess in the end i'd wished the sunshine was someplace else.

The lighting and shading makes her look very soft.

Freaking sweet! I think the sun is in a great spot!! it's blindingly sharp enough to drive your eyes back int the direction of all of their focus. AKA the bottom right corner. Freaking sweeeeeeet colors once again.

She doesn't draw it, Eric Basaldua does. She colors it.
And she has written in her FAQs what programs she uses if I'm not mistaken.

Once again, great work! The lighting was the first thing I noticed, and how you touched the skin, and the wolf with the light just right! It reads really well, and the contrast in the sun rays really gives that sun lens flare feel to it, which gives a really good mood of watching her from afar.
The second thing I noticed was the AMAZING detail on that rock! Good God Girl! Well done. I love the texture, it feels real, and really helps draw the eye back into the picture.
A few flaws I noticed, mostly on the perspective, but thats the penciller/inker, not you. So I won't comment further.
I think the coloring was done quite well! The only suggestions I might consider is with such a harsh light on her back, her front chest bone section should be a bit more pushed back, shade wise. It seems maybe a little flat along her ribs, and it feels like it could use some darker contrast maybe? But that's just my opinion, i like shadows and contrast.
Amazing job dear! Looking forward to the next, as usual!

i'd had a bit of a darker contrast, and if this cover was never to be printed i would have kept it, but i know from experience what those fleshtones do in print so i lightened it up quite a bit there and made it more pinkish vs blueish.

Oh!!! Very true, I hadn't thought of the printing. (DOH!) That is definitely something to keep in mind then. You are absolutely right on then.
Keep rockin! Great piece, and thanks for the insight!

that area will print darker by nature anyways and it'll probably balance out

I see what you mean about the sunlight, it sort of detracts from the woman.

i wouldn't have kept the sun at all i think if it had been up to me, and put it out of frame instead having it be more implied.

I really like the soft tones of the color palette. The wolves' fur looks thick and rich. I almost want to run my fingers through it, but I'd probably come out minus a hand
As always, your painted skin looks amazing.
The picture might not be 100 percent what you envisioned, but it still works. Nice mood.
