Description
I am quite pleased with this. it my be the best face i've ever colored. though i did get (obviously) bored the farther down the body i went. as can be seen by how sloppy it gets.anyway, this is Princess Azula from Avatar the Last Airbender. she's fabulous and I love her even though she goes crazy at the end.
i kind of like her crazy Fire Lord/Agni Kai hair that she cuts herself.
i love this crazy girl.
she is a good villain because she's so cold and calculating, but then her spiral into insanity is so very sad. her friends betray her and her father brushes her off, and she's all alone in the world, still believing that her mother loved her brother more.
i really believe that she could have held it together if it had not been for Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal. and i think she could have handled Mai. but it was Ty Lee who broke her. the look on her face when Ty Lee paralyzes her is one of utter shock. i believe Azula loved Ty Lee, and that Ty Lee was, in fact, the only person Azula ever loved. which made her betrayal that much more hurtful. Azula was always fragile, no matter how strong she appeared. she wanted her father's approval just as much a Zuko did. maybe more.
I could write a whole essay about how much i love this character.
i think this should be her theme song-> [link]
also, crappy background is crappy.

Azula is the best! Oh and Ursa was the first who betrayed her and let Ozai control / use her. I wrote some essays myself before about her, so I will control myself now.
Anyway good work! Thanks for it! Keep it up!

Oh well then here it goes
: TO ALL AZULA FANS:
The call to action is NOW!
This is operation "Dear Azula"
HOW: We will send them to Mike, Bryan and Gene. Since Mike and Bryan closed the snail mail, some people believed that Bryke shunned the fandom. But with the opening of Bryan's Tumblr account, we have a chance. I suggest everyone should write notes to Bryan with your letters directed to Azula. If enough fans do this, Bryan will listen. As for Gene, he has a "Contact us" thing on his website. Use that to send e-mails to Gene with your letters.
WHEN: Now until Bryan says something
WHY: Azula has a large and loyal following and for three years we fans have prayed that she would be able to get over her nervous breakdown and be out of the asylum as quickly as possible. The news that she would appear in "the promise" and that she got to keep her firebending sparked a bit of hope within the entire fan community.
But that is not enough
In the interview with avatar wikia it was said, "Gene Yang agrees with the rest of the Avatar community that Azula is a layered and fascinating character. He couldn't tell us much about of the princess but she will definitely show up in The Promise, which discusses her being put away in the insane asylum."
The phrase "discusses her being put away in the insane asylum." indicates that she may still be there and we hope that is not the case. Gene he also stated that while Aang's and Katara's destiny's may have already been decided but everybody else's is still up in is the air. The promise is not yet completed yet nor is Korra, both scripts are still being finalized.
Azula's "fate" has NOT yet been sealed
we feel that Azula is a sympathetic character, Whether or not she is a hero, villain or antihero, Azula was, in the end, just a child looking for acceptance and love. Azula kept herself hidden behind the mask that she showed to everyone but us. Azula was developed into something extraordinary and memorable. but closure was not allowed for her story and we the fans feel emotionally unfulfilled and confused by this. was she so unimportant that she wasn't even to be mentioned after her defeat, when even Ozai got a prison cell visit? Simply put, no one cared and we believe that her ending was both unfair to her and to us.
WHO: ALL AZULA FANS SHOULD PARTICIPATE! IF THEY BELIEVE IN AZULA'S CHARACTER! IF THEY BELIEVE IN REDEMPTION! WE ARE TARGETING BRYKE AND GENE LUEN YANG WHO IS DOING "THE PROMISE".
WHAT: We're writing letters TO Azula herself and sending them to Bryke and Gene Luen Yang (who are working on "The Promise")
Send it as yourself or send it as a character you created
All we are requesting is that we let our feelings be known
WHERE: send them to [link]
and [link]
(copy and paste this to as many Avatar fan sites and Azula fans as you can find)
(are currently 46 of us, please add to the number if you decide to copy and paste this)

Wonderful colours. I do like Azula; she wass a very efficient, very cunning villain. Her mental breakdown was handled pretty well too. Though she was a horrible person, we could also feel some pity for her what with her backstory. Good writing, I say.
Also, TyZula ftw.

whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-14 14:44:49 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, she was obviously brilliant, but so desperate for approval that she was also incredibly mentally fragile. And I think that her back story had a lot to do with how cruel she became. Her father valued cruelty and she wanted so badly to please him. I think that after her mother was gone, there was little hope for her. Zuko had Iroh to help him become a good person. Azula had no one. I just feel really bad for her at the end.
And yes, I ship Tyzula until I die!
π: 0 β©: 1
Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-14 16:12:56 +0000 UTC]
I think her mother is to blame partially. She doted on Zuko, but saw Azula as a monster- and she is kind of a sociopath, but the nurturing hand of a mother can dull sociopathic tendencies quite a bit. In recognizing Azula as monstrous, it became sort of a self fulfilling prophecy.
She is a right bitch, but she's well written enough that I can feel sorry for her.
Hell yeah, that's sweet! Although Zutara has its benefits, too.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-14 20:41:17 +0000 UTC]
exactly. it was a nature vs nurture situation. we can see it in the difference in how she and Zuko turned out. of course, i do think that Azula was mentally disturbed and had sociopathic tendencies, but like you said, that could have been tempered with the right care and attention. she did indeed become a self fulfilling promise. and she kind of knew it, too. i think she was aware that everyone thought she was a monster so she decided that she would be the scariest, strongest, and smartest monster they had ever seen.
she's one of those villains who you know didn't have to end up that way. and she showed occasional softness with Ty Lee, proving that she did have the capacity to care for someone, it had just been hammered out of her by her father. that's why she's so fascinating
π: 0 β©: 1
Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-14 20:55:26 +0000 UTC]
Azula is definitely socipathic, and that's something you're born with- but a firm, loving parental hand can go a long ways to curing that. I think Ursa failed her somewhat.
She tried so hard, and she was competent, too- too bad she couldn't admit that she did in fact care abouther friends; the two of them abandoning her was what sent her over the edge after all.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-14 21:02:42 +0000 UTC]
Ursa did fail her. i think that she was sure Azula was a lost cause and focused on Zuko. and Azula tried to pretend like it didn't bother her, but it did, which is very obvious right before she's going to her coronation and she sees hallucinations of her mother. it was all very sad, because you remember that she's just a 14 year old girl and all she wants is her parents to love her and be proud of her.
she did try so very hard. i mean, damn, she gave her all to do what her father asked of her. she obviously did care a lot about her friends, or their betrayal would not have affected her so much.
i think that Ty Lee knew that. she may have not been the smartest of the three, but i think that she understood Azula very well, and that the only reason she went against her was to save Mai from getting killed.

Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-15 10:02:57 +0000 UTC]
It is, it is. This is surprisingly clever writing for a show intended for twelve year olds.
Her father was pleased with her too, but he didn't really care about her. I think I know where she got her sociopathic genes...
Even if it was just in a possessive sense, she cared. Quite tragic.
I agree, and it's one of the reasons I support TyZula. It makes sense.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-15 15:52:14 +0000 UTC]
yeah, i've often thought that about the show. even at almost 22, I can still enjoy it, and appreciate how deep some of the themes are.
he cared only in so far as she could be an asset to her. and he never realized how fragile his perfect child was. when he left her behind during the invasion, that was the final straw for her already cracking psyche. and yes, definitely where she got her personality. i find it interesting that Iroh always talked about how Zuko had conflicting ancestry and how that always caused a struggle within him between good and evil, but no one really mentions that Azula has the same blood. i think that might had added to her instability. if she was completely like her father, she wouldn't have broken like that. she had enough of her mother's side in her to make her care about her parents' love and/or approval.
i love TyZula. Ty Lee is the only person i can believably see with Azula, and she seems to be one that can actually get through to the crazy princess. have you ever read "Broken Dragon?" it's probably one of my favorite fanfics about them.

I really like it- it's a step forward, out of the "just for kids" stigma that cartoons have.
I really think they could have done more with Azula as a character. There was much potential for good drama and character development, had there been a fourth season.
Oh, quite so.
Broken Dragon? Do tell me more.

whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-15 17:07:14 +0000 UTC]
indeed. and not in the crass way that a lot of them try to be more 'adult.'
me too. she and Zuko were by far the most complex characters on that show. i hope we get to find out more about what happened to her.
well, if you like Zuko, this fic is not really for you because there is tons of Zuko bashing and he's basically a total jerk, though not implausibly so. the premise is that he's got Azula locked up in a dungeon even though he told the Avatar that he would try to have her healed and looked after in a mental facility.
Ty Lee is the only one who visits her in prison and slowly helps Azula regain her sanity, but then Azula does something stupid and they break her out of prison to save her life. the rest of it is about them trying to survive on the run and Azula coming to terms with her growing feelings for Ty Lee.
i'm not very good at summaries

Oh yes, it has a lot of appeal both ways- nice and colourful action for the kids, good writing for a more mature audience.
Zuko I didn't really like much- he spent two and a half season being a whiny asshole. Azula at least had the excuse of being a villain.
Oh... this sounds somewhat familiar. I may have read it or something like it- does it feature Zuko basically, for some reason, becoming an evil copy of his father or something?

whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-16 14:40:18 +0000 UTC]
exactly. and i must say that i really enjoy the animation. especially the fire bending. i love watching it.
yes! thank you! that's exactly how i feel about him, too. i was like, ugh, get over yourself. and he was so... weak. he let Azula push him around and manipulate him.
yeah. Azula has her fire bending taken away and she's in prison and then she tries to have Zuko assassinated and then Ty Lee breaks her out because they're going to execute Azula. and Zuko is just basically a major jerk the whole time.

Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-16 15:15:40 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes. Taking a leaf out of anime really worked for them.
If only he'd at least fixed things by the beginning of first season- but he's kind of a prick all things considered, for the most of the time. Sure he had a sad backstory, but he's not the only one with issues. Katara lost her mother, Aang his entire people, and they moved on.
I think I've read that, way back. I stopped reading because of the MAJOR OOC from Zuko.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-16 15:23:19 +0000 UTC]
it did. it's so much more fluid that most western cartoons.
though, compared to his sister, he wasn't all that bad. but at least Azula wasn't a whiny baby. i think the difference is that Aang and Katara, though they had suffered losses, still knew what it meant to have a real loving family. Once Zuko's mom was gone, all he had was his father. and his uncle, who eventually helped him see the right path.
lols, yeah, it was kind of OOC, but i just loved all the TyZula so i ignored it. I thought that Azula's character development was very much in character and believable, though.

Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-16 15:38:12 +0000 UTC]
Taking a leaf out of eastern seriousness without importing the associated stereotypes. Good show.
Like I said, Azula at least has the excuse of being supposed to be a villain. We're supposed to sympathize with Zuko, and that didn't really happen with me.
To me, OOC is serious business, so I quit.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-16 15:44:02 +0000 UTC]
yep. they did well.
true. i did actually sympathize with him to a point until he betrayed Iroh. then i lost all respect for him.
i can understand that. it usually really bothers me, too, but since i don't like Zuko, i didn't really care. and I could also see certain situations where he could revert back to his old self and turn into his father (though not nearly as bad)
π: 0 β©: 1
Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-16 16:38:41 +0000 UTC]
Progress.
Yeah, seriously... he ditches the one guy who's been more of a father to him than the sociopathic fire lord, and for what?
(Speaking of which, how can somebody as youthful and muscled as Ozai be brothers with Iroh? Iroh looks like he could be his father. )
I see your point. Me, I just get really bugged by it.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-16 16:56:34 +0000 UTC]
i know, right? what a jerk. (lol, i think that Iroh is supposed to be significantly older. Azula did say that Azulon was ancient. if he had more than one wife, it's possible for Iroh to be a lot older. also, i think losing his son really aged him.)
i can understand that.
π: 0 β©: 1
Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-16 17:13:48 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. He sort of blew his chances at being a hero there.
(Iroh would have to be at least thirty years older, or even forty. But given that Azulon lived long, and probably had many wives and concubines... yeah, I guess it makes sense.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-16 17:18:28 +0000 UTC]
yep.
i don't think he would have been that much older. may be 10-15 years. i mean, people can age prematurely due to stress and sickness and things like that. and Iroh really lost his drive when his son died. i think that may have had a real impact on his aging. and it's hard to tell from a cartoon, anyway. gray hair is not necessarily an indicator. my grandmother went gray when she was 20.
π: 0 β©: 1
Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-16 19:11:21 +0000 UTC]
I'd say twenty at the least. He's old and grey- wrinkled and short, typical signs of aging- and Ozai is barely past his prime.
π: 0 β©: 1
whutnot In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-04-16 19:26:35 +0000 UTC]
his wikipedia says he's 64 at the beginning, but i can't find Ozai's age, so you may be right. because Zuko is 16, meaning that Ozai is probably in his 40s.
still, not unheard of for siblings to be so far apart. Iroh could have been born when their mother was very very young, and Ozai could have been born right at the end of her fertility viability.
π: 0 β©: 1
Greatkingrat88 In reply to whutnot [2012-04-16 19:29:24 +0000 UTC]
Well, the explanation you proposed does make sense, since an old fire lord would have had a lot of time to procreate. One wonders why Iroh and Ozai are his only sons if that's the case, though.
