I'm no sure. I don't know much japanese outside of some spoken stuff to get me around town. The village we were in was doing their reinactment of the battles between northern okinawa and southern okinawa, and it is possible that the meaning behind it lies in there. Sorry I couldn't give you more of an explaination. They actually burned a few of them, so it may have made more sense if I had captured them all.
