Description Since I joined DeviantArt 5 years ago I've had a lot of fun drawing aged-up versions of cartoon characters, and I've gotten plenty of excited comments asking how I go about the process.  Wel since Daylight Savings Time ended last night I got an extra hour and I decided to write this tutorial up.  Hopefully it doesn't seem like too much text, I just wanted to give a solid walk through of my technique so that other people can learn the tricks I've discovered for a good design.  You can also use these principles to age down a character and make them younger, and many of the tips will also help for designing a character from scratch.

I hope you find this tutorial helpful, if you use it in your own art be sure to let me know!

Thank you so much!  You should search for PPGZ art here on DA, I believe several artists have done PPGZ in the original show style.

This is a great tutorial for ageing up characters.
I do have a question, though.

In #4, you said that looking at adults in the art helps with ageing the character, but sometimes the adults are either:
A. Absent in the art style used, or
B. Completely different species from the child characters.
I ran into this problem when ageing up Milli and Geo from Team Umizoomi & designing their parents, so finding the right anchoring points was hard. Is it okay to draw an adult design based on the anchoring points and adult features alone if there's no adults in the art style to base off them?

Ok, well in your case when you were aging up Milli and Geo, you would use *their* designs to find the anchoring points needed to age those 2 characters up.  In drawing their parents you would assume that they have similar features since they are related, so you could also use Milli and Geo's designs to point you in the right direction for the traits of their parents.

Referencing adults in the series is helpful but not totally necessary.  Sometimes you can check other shows on the same channel or by the same creator for inspiration though.  For instance, I could use Dexter's Mom to help design adult PPG if I couldn't find enough female characters on their show, because they were by the same creators and had such similar styles.  But step 4 is mainly just to help the adult designs "fit" in the already established world -  if there aren't adults to ref they won't really look wrong if you get a little creative.  I hope that makes sense!
