They start to bloom in the early evening. Very poisonous.
I just picked some about an hour ago. I wore rubber gloves to do it.

I sometimes wear garden gloves, when handling aconite or hellebore. In general it's advisable to wear gloves when handling fresh poisonous herbs. But there's differences in the amount of toxins, depending on growing conditions, and whether you harvest in the wild or in your garden.

The ones I got were in the wild. If you consider growing along the streets of Brooklyn to be wild!

Mine are spoiled with fresh garden soil and such. But there was the caterpillar of a native moth gnawing on them. So it's possible they produced more toxin as a defense. In any case, better be save than sorry.

I read that they are great for attracting butterflies. That might be why they're there.

Rather moths, as they open at night... at least I have not seen any butterflies on mine.

They open just before and during twilight around here.

The flower comes out great with the black background!

Thanks. This is taken at night, with an external flashlight (the lamp from my bicycle). The whole series has different lighting situations - this one had the strongest contrast.
