It runs a mass tesseract unit the draws power from zero point energy. The sublight drives are known as Graviton Engines which draw from the tesseract using a 'graviton syphon'. They generate a gravimetric field which use to accelerate particles through the engines and provide thrust and lift. It also has standard rocket motors for exiting atmosphere. It's an old transport ship about 350m long. It was 400m but the nose was smashed in a crash. The ship was subsequently rebuilt and refitted for Paige and her mercenary crew.

Yeah, tesseract drives are meant to be highly sought after due to their relative rarity. Many years before a devastating series of wars basically set the colonies back centuries technologically and the know-how in building them was lost. In the case of Shadow Star, Paige is contracted by a major corporation who funded its restoration and she provides monthly telemetry data in order to help them reverse engineer the drive so they can eventually build them for themselve.
