Here's the lowdown on Xerxes:

"A member of minor nobility among the Pirate clans, Xerx and his mother lived with relatives on Siberna while his father handled the troublesome affairs of the family on Rhoma. On Siberna, Xerx was exposed to the Gestalt tournaments by way of his cousin, Isibar, to whom he grew very close. Through the connections of Isibar's family, Xerx managed to get his foot in the door with the Gestalt fighting circuits, using technical skills he learned from starship crews in order to make Gestalts run better. Xerx rose in ranks among the technicians in the Gestalt pits, and saved his earnings to buy himself a Gestalt of his own. Having chanced to fall in love with Neela Eweke, an itinerant technician from Mandela I, he named the Gestalt "Imani," meaning "faith in Neela's native tongue. Learning fighting skills from Neela, the two became an inseparable pair, and he and Neela wed on Tinges, one of the lesser moons of Rhoma. It was here that they discovered the Reckless, a warship from the days of the First Imperium, entrusted to his family's care. With wealth accrued from his successes in the Gestalt tournaments, Xerx repaired the ship in secret, and along with Neela, began to ply his family trade as a member of the Pirate guilds. His career has been a successful one indeed."
