Description

This is a character concept for a story developed by Iain McCaig as part of his workshop at the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live convention.

It is a re-telling of Red Riding Hood, in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting.

Red is a brain-washed clone who's arm was harvested by the Originals.  Perhaps for cruelty or entertainment, the Originals replace the clone body parts with all manner of prosthetic limbs.

In this version, Red 3 is burdened by a life-crippling rusty hunk of metal.

This is another interpretation of the same character:

You so rarely see concept art that truly gives you a sense of a new original idea. This one is all that, and I love it!

Amazing.  So much personality comes through the brilliant costume design and her overall look.

I really like the full body shot and the way you handled her posture to account for the weight of her arm.

I can say with complete sincerity that this is one of the best character concept pieces I've seen here on deviantART. I like everything about it; subject matter, the dynamism of the brushwork and drawing, and the excellent body-language and expression.

I would...totally watch a movie with this heroine.  I think this is my favorite out of the two designs; I love her more feminine look, but grittier.   She's been through more.

All in all, I'm loving these!   Can't wait to see what else you come up with!

You're in a workshop with Iain McCaig?! OMG, love that guy so much. It's one of my goals in life to meet him and see him draw in person.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Wildweasel339 In reply to rubengramos [2014-06-10 02:51:56 +0000 UTC]

The workshop was just a few hours in total. But, man, Iain is so inspirational!  He's got ton of energy and enthusiasm for what he does.

You should definitely check out his "Visual Storytelling" DVDs, if you haven't already. Although it's great to meet him in person, these pretty much cover everything and more that he taught. www.amazon.com/Visual-Story-Te…   (If you search google you can find them online as well.)  I re-watch them all the time.

Wow, that's so cool. I bought the 4th DVD in that series, and I plan on getting the 1st three. I'm glad they come recommended.

What was the biggest takeaway from the workshop?

Wildweasel339 In reply to rubengramos [2014-06-11 10:05:21 +0000 UTC]

He mainly wanted to show his 3 step process for concepting a character.

Step 1: Collect all ideas. Make rough and ugly sketches just to get the ideas on the page.
Step 2: Research your subject. Find reference, and study that reference by making direct drawings from it.
Step 3: Combine your ideas from step 1 with the knowledge you gained from step 2. Refine.

Also, just draw all the time.  Don't worry about small details at first. Focus on the big picture.

He also talked a bit about storytelling.  There are some good notes here, from an older workshop: solarskistudio.com/blog/storyt…

Thank-you for sharing that, Lane! I'm storing all of these tidbits away when I can get them, and I'm trying to apply them as best I can. But that is some great advice, and I appreciate you taking the time to share.
