Description
The Labrador Duck, Camptorhynchus labradorius, is yet another extinct species. Female at left, male on right. It was related to the surviving Eider ducks. It lived around eastern North America, breeding in Labrador and Quebec and wintering along the shores of New England and New Jersey. It fed in shallow water mainly on small mollusks. It had a wide, soft bill with which it probed to find these. We don't know much about its breeding. It was originally rare and declined as a result of human activity impacting the numbers of molluscs along the coast; it was not really hunted much as supposedly it tasted bad, but it was sometimes shot for its feathers and its eggs were collected. It was last seen in 1878. Only numerous stuffed museum specimens remain of this unique duck.
